# BNY Mellon's new emerging-market debt ETF is active, unconstrained, and not a cheaper EMB

BNY Mellon's Emerging Markets Debt ETF BEMD listed Friday, August 14, 2026, at a 0.40% fee, with $23.7 million in assets as of September 11.

By ETF.net Research. Published Sep 14, 2026.

The largest holding in BNY Mellon's new emerging-market debt ETF is a U.S. Treasury. As of September 13, a 4.125% note due February 2036 was **5.93%** of BEMD, and three Treasuries together were **13.4%**. iShares' $14.2 billion EMB has **6.7%** in its entire top ten.

Insight North America, the BNY affiliate running the portfolio, can buy high-yield and frontier bonds, skip a duration cap, and put more than 20% of assets in a single country or region. The first disclosed book already uses that room: a **28.6%** top ten, with Brazil, Chile's Codelco, South Africa, Romania, Argentina, and Ecuador behind the Treasuries.

Four shares had printed as of late Monday morning, September 14. BNY's product page as of September 11 showed a **47,033**-share 20-day average and 8 shares of previous-day volume. EMB averages **6 million** shares a day.

## What Insight put in BEMD

As of September 13 the portfolio held 98 positions. A December 2026 bill and a 2055 Treasury sit just behind the 2036 note. Four corporate and quasi-sovereign names in the top 20 (Codelco, Prosus, Petróleos del Perú, and Ecopetrol) add **7.4%**. Two Argentine step-coupon bonds add **3.4%**. An Egyptian 7.5% bond due 2061 is a reminder that the duration mandate is blank.

The fund normally invests at least 80% of net assets, plus borrowings for investment, in fixed-income securities of emerging-market issuers, principally in dollars, euros, or sterling. The Treasuries sit in the remainder. The July 22 prospectus says the fund may invest significantly in bonds rated below investment grade or the unrated equivalent, may include frontier markets, places no limits on maturity or duration, and typically hedges local-currency bonds to the dollar.

Federico Garcia Zamora, Insight's head of EMD macro strategies, and Rodica Glavan, head of emerging-market corporate fixed income at Insight UK, have managed the fund since inception.

That mix is the product. Vanguard's Emerging Markets Government Bond ETF VWOB samples U.S. dollar government and government-related emerging-market debt. EMB tracks dollar-denominated sovereign and quasi-sovereign bonds. BNY's fund can own both, plus companies, plus the Treasuries.

## EMB, VWOB, and the active field already on the shelf

The **0.40%** expense ratio, gross and net, with no contractual waiver, sits one basis point above EMB. Fees below are the current figures as of September 13–14.

Table: What you own, Fund, Assets, Fee

The fund had **$23.7 million** as of September 11, with 960,001 shares outstanding. Global X's active EMBD has been live since June 2020 and holds $246 million. Janus Henderson's hard-currency JEMB, launched in August 2024, holds $463 million. etf.net's hard-currency emerging-market debt category already counts 16 funds.

## Cash redemptions, no yield yet

Unlike most equity ETFs, the fund currently intends to meet redemptions in cash rather than in kind, because of the nature of its holdings. The summary prospectus warns that can force portfolio sales, transaction costs, and capital-gain distributions remaining shareholders would not face in an in-kind fund. Combined with no turnover limit, that is a tax feature, not a footnote. The fund is also non-diversified, so a single issuer can move net asset value more than in EMB.

BNY had not published a 30-day SEC yield or a 30-day median bid-ask spread as of September 11, and no distribution is on record. Since-inception total return was **-1.52%** through Monday, next to EMB's **-1.75%** from the August 13 close through Monday. One month is not a test of active management.

A 4.125% Treasury due 2036 at the top of an emerging-market debt book is the launch. The fee and the cash redemptions are the wrapper around it. EMB remains the $14.2 billion hard-currency index fund. BNY listed something else.
