# Cybersecurity ETFs rise 10.7% as chip funds fall 5.6% on AI slowdown call

Monday, September 14, 2026: Global X's BUG gained 10.7% and iShares' SOXX lost 5.6%; the S&P 500 closed 0.48% lower at 7,620.25.

By ETF.net Research. Published Sep 14, 2026.

The S&P 500's **0.48%** decline to **7,620.25** hid a 16-percentage-point split inside technology. Global X's cybersecurity fund closed **10.7%** higher. The iShares semiconductor fund closed **5.6%** lower.

Between them sat a weekend essay. Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei argued that frontier labs should slow the pace of AI development. OpenAI's Sam Altman and Elon Musk backed the call. Monday was the first U.S. session to price it. The Nasdaq-100 fell **0.82%**. The Dow lost **0.29%**.

SOXX is down **9.7%** over one month and **16.5%** over three, and sits 24% below its 52-week high of $655.95. It is still up 65% year to date. BUG is still down **0.3%** over one month. The essay gave that three-month hardware slide a headline.

Among widely traded unleveraged funds, cybersecurity products led. Semiconductors and South Korea sat at the other end.

Table: Fund, Day

## Cybersecurity funds at 52-week highs

BUG closed at **$44.31**, a tick under its 52-week high of $44.58. Volume was 2.9 million shares against an average day of 889,000. WisdomTree's smaller WCBR rose **10.5%**. Amplify's HACK, a $2.8 billion fund and the first cybersecurity ETF, gained **7.9%**. iShares' IHAK added **7.8%**.

The gap inside the group is composition. Okta, CrowdStrike, Palo Alto Networks, and Zscaler all closed double digits higher. HACK holds Broadcom, which fell **4.8%** and clipped **0.26 percentage points** off the fund. First Trust's CIBR rose **6.0%**. iShares' expanded software fund IGV gained **5.0%**: the bid ran through software, and ran hardest through security.

The stocks did the work.

Chart: Rapid7 led a **broad** security bid

CrowdStrike closed at **$235.38** and tagged a 52-week high of $239.37 in the session.

24/7 Wall Street, in a September 14 piece, framed the surge as AI-safety warnings sparking a security bid. The Motley Fool, midday, said buyers were hedging the risks Amodei, Altman, and Musk had flagged over the weekend. MarketWatch had CrowdStrike and Palo Alto Networks leading software toward a historic outperformance of chips. That is the attributed read for the group. Investing.com gave SentinelOne a different cause: a Wedbush initiation on September 11, a Susquehanna target raise, and a William Blair buy. Analyst notes, not the essay.

## SOXX, Korea, and the rest of the losers

SOXX dropped **5.6%** to $497.40. VanEck's SMH lost **4.8%**. State Street's equal-weight XSD fell **6.1%**, the extra damage coming from names the cap-weighted funds dilute. All 30 of SOXX's priced holdings summed to **−5.69 percentage points**. Micron (−5.3%), Teradyne (−13.3%), Advanced Micro Devices (−4.4%), and Marvell (−7.3%) were the largest drags.

Nvidia, SOXX's top holding, fell **3.4%** to $210.96. Super Micro Computer lost **8.4%**, Intel **5.6%**, Taiwan Semiconductor **3.5%**. Teradyne's **13.3%** drop was the sharpest print among the large chip names.

South Korea transmitted the same shock overnight. The Kospi fell **3.3%** before New York opened. iShares' South Korea fund EWY then took the U.S. session on top, closing **6.6%** lower. SK Hynix, **24%** of the fund, dropped **6.3%** in Seoul. Samsung Electronics is another **22%**. Together they are nearly half the product. iShares' emerging-markets fund EEM lost **2.7%**.

Single-stock 2x funds on AXT, Astera Labs, and Coherent fell **20%** to **25%**, tracking underlyings down about **12%**. Same chip session, more torque.

Crude and energy stocks parted. United States Oil Fund USO rose **1.1%** and the Brent fund BNO **1.3%**, while State Street's energy sector fund XLE fell **0.94%**.

State Street's technology sector fund XLK still fell **1.8%**. The day's split lived in the dedicated products. Inside a market-cap tech sleeve, software did not offset chips.
