# Equal-weight stocks matched the S&P 500 after September's lag. Slightly more stocks fell.

After the equal-weight index fell 4.8% in September, the S&P 500 fund SPY rose 0.68% and the equal-weight fund rose 0.66% on Monday, October 5, 2026, while 2,816 US stocks fell and 2,797 rose.

The equal-weight S&P 500 fund matched the S&P 500 fund on Monday. On the NYSE, Nasdaq and NYSE American, 2,816 common stocks fell and 2,797 rose.

S&P Dow Jones Indices said the equal-weight index fell 4.8% in September and the S&P 500 fell 0.3%, both including dividends through September 30.

On Friday, RSP, which holds each S&P 500 stock in the same amount, trailed SPY by 0.39 percentage points. SPY holds the index, with the largest companies taking the biggest share.

On Monday the gap narrowed to **0.02** percentage points. SPY gained 0.68% to $774.88, and RSP gained 0.66%.

The S&P 500 closed 0.54% below its high of the past year. SPY closed $4.49 below its own high. As of Friday, 45.4% of the stocks in the index were above their average price of the past 200 trading days, StreetStats reported.

## SpaceX and Nvidia led the Nasdaq fund

QQQ, the fund that holds the Nasdaq-100, gained 0.88%. SpaceX, 2.8% of the fund, rose 7.6% and added more to the gain than Nvidia, which is 8.4% of the fund and rose 2.1%. Together the two supplied 0.39 percentage points of that gain.

A day of matching does not repair the gap between RSP and SPY since August. RSP's price is down 3.8% from the last close of August, and SPY's is up 1.0%.
