# Industrials bounce 1.1% after a 7.3% month as energy lags

Friday, September 11, 2026: the Vanguard Information Technology ETF VGT rose 1.22% to lead all 11 U.S. sector funds; nine rose, including industrials XLI up 1.07% after a 7.3% one-month drop, while health care XLV and utilities XLU fell.

The industrial fund XLI rose **1.07%** on Friday, a bounce that leaves a **7.3%** one-month decline in place. The energy fund XLE, up 6.7% over that month, gained 0.31% and finished ninth, with West Texas Intermediate crude at $100.32 a barrel as of 4:31 p.m. Eastern, down **2.1%**. The consumer-price index rose 0.4% in August, more than a third of it from gasoline. The S&P 500 fund SPY rose 0.83% and snapped a four-session, 2.0% decline.

Chart: **Technology** led as nine of eleven sector funds rose

## Apple, Cisco, and the power stocks

Apple, at 16% of the Vanguard Information Technology ETF VGT, rose **1.7%** and added 0.28 percentage points, the largest single contribution. Nvidia, 17% of assets, fell **0.1%**. Cisco rose 4.4% and Advanced Micro Devices 2.5%.

Dell Technologies jumped **11.9%** and Hewlett Packard Enterprise **12.4%**, the hardware move that filled the day's stock headlines. They are **0.9%** of VGT combined and added 0.11 percentage points, less than Apple alone.

GE Vernova, 4.6% of XLI, rose **3.6%** and added 0.17 percentage points. Eaton rose **4.0%**, Quanta Services **5.1%**, and Caterpillar 1.7%. Those four names produced about half the fund's gain.

Amazon, 25% of the consumer discretionary fund XLY, rose **1.9%** and accounted for more than half of that fund's **0.85%** advance. Tesla added 0.5%. XLY is still down **4.2%** over the past month.

Alphabet's two share classes and T-Mobile, up **2.9%**, lifted the communication services fund XLC **1.01%**, a continuation rather than a reversal: that fund is already up **2.1%** over the past month.

## UnitedHealth's fifth down session

The health care fund XLV fell **0.18%**, its fifth consecutive decline and a **4.6%** drop over those five sessions. UnitedHealth, 5.9% of the fund, fell **2.4%** and subtracted 0.14 percentage points. Eli Lilly, the 15% weight, fell 0.7%. AbbVie, Intuitive Surgical, and Moderna rose and did not offset the two.

The utilities fund XLU fell **0.35%**, the session's laggard, and sits 1.5% above its 52-week low. Southern, PG&E, Dominion, and Sempra, the regulated book, all declined. Vistra rose 0.9% and NRG 1.6%, so the drop sat in the regulated names.

Exxon Mobil and Chevron, 35% of XLE together, were up less than 1% and still contributed more than Valero and Marathon Petroleum. The fund is up **48%** year to date.

Table: Sector, Friday, 1-month

The Federal Reserve meets next week. The health care fund goes into that meeting down **4.6%** over five sessions; the industrial fund goes in with most of a **7.3%** one-month decline still on the books.
