# Most U.S. stocks rose Thursday. The typical one is still down on the week

On Thursday, September 3, the equal-weight S&P 500 fund lagged the cap-weighted fund by 0.38 percentage points, leaving the typical stock down for the week.

The S&P 500 fund SPY gained **1.05%** at Thursday's close. A majority of U.S. stocks rose with it, a smaller share than Wednesday's 62%, and the extra return sat in the names that weigh the most. Over five sessions that split is larger than Thursday's: SPY is up **0.27%**, the equal-weight S&P 500 fund RSP is down **0.63%**, and the Russell 2000 small-cap fund IWM is down 1.5%.

Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller said he could support holding rates at this month's meeting if inflation data keep cooling. Fed funds futures implied a **50.4%** chance of a September hike, down from **63.2%** on Wednesday. The same session sent the largest stocks further than the rest of the market.

## A majority advanced, thinner than Wednesday

Of **5,826** U.S. common stocks listed on the NYSE, Nasdaq and NYSE American, **3,258** rose, **2,297** fell, and 271 were unchanged. Exchange-traded funds, other funds, foreign listings, and currency and crypto symbols are out of the count. Advancers were **56%** of that board.

That is a real advance. It is not a landslide, and it is not an improvement on the session before it. Tuesday, September 1, was a washout: 3,868 stocks fell, and decliners led by more than two to one. Wednesday repaired that. Thursday kept the majority on the plus side, lost some of Wednesday's breadth, and let the cap-weighted index speed up.

One day's advance-decline count is weather. Two recovery sessions in a row still leave the typical stock short of a full repair.

## SPY gained 0.38 percentage points more than RSP

RSP rose **0.66%**. Same 500 companies, equal weights: it trailed SPY by **0.38** percentage points. Size paid on Thursday; the middle of the market did not keep up.

Chart: **QQQ** and SPY outran equal-weight and small caps

The eight largest contributors supplied **0.55** percentage points of SPY's **1.05%** rise, more than half the session. Microsoft added 0.15 percentage points on a 2.7% gain. Nvidia added 0.15 on 1.8%. Tesla, up 5.4%, and Apple, up 1.0%, filled in most of the rest. Fourteen of the 20 largest stocks finished higher, moving with the majority rather than against it.

That split is how a fund with 38% of its weight in ten stocks is built to behave, not a hidden malfunction. The equal-weight book tells the other half: its largest eight contributors accounted for only 0.09 percentage points of a 0.66% gain. RSP actually moved with its members. SPY moved with its giants.

Six of the 20 largest stocks finished lower. Only Broadcom mattered. The chip designer fell **2.7%** after earnings and subtracted 0.07 percentage points from SPY, the session's largest drag.

## Equal-weight still leads the year

Through Thursday, RSP is up **15.8%** year to date against **14.0%** for SPY. Small caps have led both: IWM is up **20.4%**. A week in which the cap-weighted fund held up and equal-weight did not sits inside that year. It does not erase it.

Friday's employment report is the next tape. The read would change if RSP beat SPY at Friday's close: the median S&P 500 stock taking the session, the way it has for the year.
