# Nuveen's NXUS grew to $4 billion as its target-date funds built the book

The Nuveen International Aggregate Bond ETF NXUS returned -0.41% from its first close through Wednesday, September 23, 2026, and held $4.01 billion in assets.

Nuveen's Lifecycle Index funds used the newly listed Nuveen International Aggregate Bond ETF, NXUS, as their international bond sleeve. Four vintages held **$1.20 billion** of the currency-hedged, non-U.S. investment-grade book as of July 31. On Wednesday, September 23, a year after listing, the ETF closed at **$24.26**, off 0.70%, two cents above its 52-week low, on **9,714** shares.

From the first close of $24.98 on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, the share price fell **2.9%**. Eleven monthly distributions, totaling **$0.624** a share, almost filled the hole. Reinvested, that is a **-0.41%** total return. Eleven checks, none of them large, did most of the work.

## Lifecycle Index funds are the bid

As of July 31, Nuveen Lifecycle Index 2035 held 5.69% of that vintage in NXUS. The 2045 fund held 3.03%, the 2050 fund 2.17%, and the 2060 fund 1.57%. Nearer retirement dates hold more.

The 2025 vintage carried a **6.8%** sleeve as of May 31.

Assets were **$4.01 billion** as of Wednesday. Nuveen published average daily volume of **239,636** shares as of Wednesday, well above the Monday-to-Wednesday prints.

Chart: Anniversary-week prints ran **far below** the 239,636-share average

That volume is turnover, not a measure of how much a holder can sell. A $4.01 billion book against 9,714 shares on Wednesday means creations and redemptions, not the secondary market, have to keep the share price honest. On Wednesday they did: Nuveen reported a NAV of **$24.27** against the **$24.26** close. The same session, Vanguard's Total International Bond ETF BNDX traded **5.70 million** shares and iShares' Core International Aggregate Bond ETF IAGG traded 2.62 million.

## Same 0.07% fee as BNDX and IAGG

The fund was built as a third 0.07% sleeve of the same idea Vanguard and iShares have sold for years: investment-grade bonds denominated outside the dollar, with the currency risk hedged back to dollars. Over the same first-close-to-anniversary window, NXUS finished between those two copies.

Table: Fund, Exposure, Expense ratio, Total return

Total return is closing price to closing price, distributions reinvested, from September 24, 2025, through September 23, 2026. The iShares Core U.S. Aggregate Bond ETF AGG, the domestic investment-grade benchmark, returned **-0.84%** over that span.

The three international funds do not track identical indexes, and the spread is a difference in the sample, not a verdict on the year. NXUS follows the Bloomberg Global Aggregate ex-USD (Hedged) Index. BNDX follows a float-adjusted, RIC-capped version of that universe. IAGG follows an issuer-capped version whose largest lines, as of Tuesday, were Chinese government bonds.

## A 3,200-bond sample of a 14,000-bond index

As of December 31, 2025, that index held 14,055 securities. As of Wednesday, NXUS held **3,224** positions. The top 10 were **5.0%** of assets. The single largest line was not a bond. It was a dollar-euro currency forward, **0.93%** of the fund: the hedge made visible.

Effective duration was **6.39** years as of August 31, against 6.5 years for BNDX on the same date. Average effective maturity was 8.24 years. The 30-day SEC yield was **3.82%** as of Tuesday, September 22, beside **3.79%** on the Vanguard fund a day earlier. You own non-dollar interest-rate and credit risk, translated into dollars, at a duration that will move when foreign yields do.

The first year did not answer whether anyone outside Nuveen's target-date complex needed a third copy at 0.07%. It answered who paid for this one. If those Lifecycle Index allocations move, Wednesday's 9,714 shares are not a market that can take the other side.
