# Oil rose 4.5% and the 10-year yield stood at 5% as two U.S. stocks fell for every one that rose

On Tuesday, September 15, 2026, 1,875 of 5,827 U.S. common stocks advanced and 3,717 declined; SPY fell 0.46% and equal-weight RSP fell 0.49%.

West Texas Intermediate crude rose **4.5%** to $105.92 a barrel toward 4:22 p.m. Eastern on Tuesday, and the 10-year Treasury yield was **5.00%**. The Federal Reserve's rate decision is due Wednesday. Most U.S. stocks fell against those levels, and the S&P 500 fell with them, closing at 7,585.51, down **0.45%**.

Energy was the exception. The energy-sector fund XLE, which holds the energy companies in the S&P 500, gained **2.2%** and closed 0.4% from its 52-week high. Exxon Mobil rose **2.54%**. A large-cap value fund, VTV, was nearly unchanged, down 0.08%. A large-cap growth fund, VUG, fell 0.74%, a **0.66 percentage point** gap. The damage inside large caps sat in growth, not in the whole size cohort.

Of 5,827 U.S. common stocks listed on the NYSE, Nasdaq and NYSE American, **1,875** advanced, **3,717** declined and 235 were unchanged.

Chart: Two stocks fell for every one that rose

Counted name by name, it was a broad decline, not a handful of giants moving a cap-weighted headline.

## Equal-weight followed the S&P 500. Small caps did not

The S&P 500 fund SPY lost **0.46%**. The equal-weight S&P 500 fund RSP, which holds the same companies at the same size, lost **0.49%**. The gap was 0.03 percentage points. When those two funds move in lockstep, the average S&P 500 name is doing what the index says. The rest of the market was weaker. The Nasdaq-100 fund QQQ fell 0.65%. The small-cap Russell 2000 fund IWM fell **0.96%**.

Microsoft, down **1.64%**, and Amazon, down **2.02%**, were the largest drags on SPY. Nvidia, up **0.57%**, and Exxon Mobil worked the other way. The rest of the holdings were still negative.

Table: What you own, Tuesday, 5-day, 1-month

Over five sessions, RSP has lagged SPY by 0.16 percentage points. Over a month the gap is **1.5 percentage points**. IWM is down **6.5%** over a month, **4.1 percentage points** more than SPY. That is where the weaker participation of the past month has been concentrated.

## Nvidia rose. Thirteen of the 20 largest listings did not

Among the 20 largest U.S. listings, **7** finished higher and **13** finished lower, including both of Alphabet's share classes. The hit rate is close to the 32% that advanced across the whole board.

Oracle fell **3.05%**. In a Tuesday all-hands, its chief financial officer, Hilary Maxson, told employees that "doing more with less" is not the answer, a day after a new round of layoffs. Netflix dropped **3.01%**. Amazon fell **2.02%**, Costco 1.91%, Microsoft 1.64% and Broadcom 1.58%. Alphabet Class A shares fell 1.26%. Apple and Tesla declined less than 1%.

The seven that rose were not a single theme. Exxon Mobil led. Nvidia, Meta Platforms, JPMorgan Chase, Berkshire Hathaway, Johnson & Johnson and Visa also finished higher, Visa only barely. Advanced Micro Devices, which is large without sitting in that 20, gained **2.19%**.

The year still disagrees with the month. IWM remains up **16.3%** year to date, ahead of SPY at **11.7%** and RSP at **12.6%**. Breadth this weak on a Tuesday does not erase that. It does mean a 0.5% index decline is the sort of session that vanishes from a monthly chart, while two declining stocks for every advancing one is the fact that does not.

Kevin Gordon, head of macro research and strategy at the Schwab Center for Financial Research, said Tuesday that the main drivers of inflation, tariffs, energy and AI capital spending, have not slowed materially.
