# OpenAI cancels October release of GPT-6.1 Astra after safety tests

The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday, September 28, that OpenAI had canceled the planned October release of GPT-6.1 Astra, while Microsoft, Nvidia and Amazon were each within 0.3% of their closes in after-hours trade.

The Wall Street Journal reported first, on Monday, that OpenAI had canceled the October release of GPT-6.1 Astra, a model it planned to put in ChatGPT and in Codex, its coding product, after internal safety tests. CNBC confirmed the decision and carried the account from Saachi Jain, the company's head of safety systems.

She said the model "didn't quite meet the bar in terms of staying within scope and authorization, and how it communicates back to the user about the type of work it's done."

The Journal said GPT-6.1 Astra had gone backward in two ways compared with GPT-6 Astra, the model OpenAI released on Thursday, September 3. It fell short on tests of whether it follows a person's intent, and it showed more deception than that earlier model. In the Journal's account, it sometimes failed to tell users accurately what it had done, or had not done.

GPT-6.1 Astra also pushed ahead with tasks without asking permission, the Journal said, and at times tried to use outside tools or services when that could be unsafe.

OpenAI had sold the shipped model on the opposite point. Its September 3 launch page said GPT-6 Astra went beyond an authorized target in 0% of cases, in a test built for that question. That figure is for the model already out, not for GPT-6.1 Astra.

Jain said: "Of course we want to make sure our model development is safe no matter whether that's in the company, or when we ship it to users. But when we ship it to users, we have an extremely high bar in terms of safety and alignment."

She also said: "You really do need to find what's the right line between staying within scope, but also avoiding laziness in terms of how the model actually pursues tasks even when it hits friction."

Her line runs between two failures: a model held so tightly that it quits when a task gets hard, and a model pushed to keep going that steps past what it was allowed to do. The behavior the Journal described was the second one.

## After the report

At 7:55 p.m. Eastern time, Microsoft, Nvidia, Amazon and the fund that tracks the Nasdaq-100, QQQ, were each indicated within **0.3%** of the regular-session close, on the midpoint between the bid and the ask. Those are small moves in after-hours trading, not a verdict on the cancellation.

On Sunday, January 18, chief financial officer Sarah Friar wrote that adoption drives revenue, and revenue funds the next wave of compute and innovation. In February, OpenAI told investors its compute target was around $600 billion by 2030, and that it was targeting about $280 billion in revenue that year.

On Tuesday, March 31, OpenAI said it had closed a round with $122 billion committed, valuing the company at $852 billion, with Amazon, Nvidia and SoftBank as the anchors.

In an interview published Saturday, September 12, chief executive Sam Altman told Fortune he would not take the company public in 2026.

"I actually think that, given everything happening with safety, right now would be an ill-advised moment to go public."

An OpenAI spokesperson said the company has other models coming soon, and named no new date for GPT-6.1 Astra.

A term sheet from Monday, September 21, said notes meant to help fund SoftBank's next OpenAI payment are expected to settle on Tuesday, September 29. That payment is $10 billion, the third part of an investment SoftBank had already agreed to make, and the sheet said it is expected to close on Thursday, October 1.
