Our read on BKLN
CBank loans in an ETF wrapper, running since 2011. BKLN buys the 100-loan slice of the leveraged loan market built for liquidity: senior secured, floating-rate paper that ranks above bonds in the capital stack, paid out monthly.
The fund provides exposure to the largest and most liquid senior secured loans by tracking the Morningstar LSTA US Leveraged Loan 100 Index.
Why people hold it
- Tracks the Morningstar LSTA US Leveraged Loan 100 Index, so you get the largest and most liquid US senior secured loans (roughly 160 positions) without sourcing loans yourself.
- One of the most actively traded funds in its category and a multi-billion-dollar book, which is what you want in an asset class where the underlying market is dealer-driven.
- Pays monthly, and the coupons underneath are floating rate, resetting with short-term benchmarks rather than sitting fixed like a bond coupon.
- Live since 2011, a long track record for a niche wrapper, and the mandate has stayed pinned to the same liquid-loan index.
Worth knowing
- At 0.67% it runs well above the 0.40% median of its credit cohort, and the top-scoring high-yield names (SCYB at 0.03%, SPHY at 0.05%) charge a sliver of that.
- Floating rate cuts both ways: coupons reset down when short-term rates fall, so income here moves with the rate cycle instead of locking in.
- This is the liquid top end of the loan market, not the whole thing. The index screens for the biggest, most tradable loans from below-investment-grade borrowers.
