Our read on BRHY
BActive management in a corner of the market run by ultra-cheap index trackers. BlackRock's team picks the junk bonds, sticks mostly to maturities of ten years or less, and pays income monthly.
The fund seeks to maximize total return while generating income through prudent investment management. It primarily invests in non-investment-grade bonds with maturities of ten years or less and normally commits at least 80% of net assets to high-yield investments or economically similar instruments.
Why people hold it
- A real active mandate, not index-hugging: at least 80% of net assets in high-yield debt, aimed at total return plus income, with a tilt toward bonds maturing within ten years.ishares.com
- Spreads its bets across roughly 900 bonds, so no single stumbling issuer dominates the outcome. Income is paid monthly.
- Measured against the Bloomberg U.S. Corporate High Yield 2% Issuer Capped Index, so there is a clear public yardstick for what the managers are actually adding.ishares.com
- Runs true to the mandate it prints in its prospectus, and lands in the upper half of a crowded high-yield ETF field on our review.
Worth knowing
- You pay for the stock-picking: 0.45% a year, above the high-yield cohort median of 0.40% and many times what index rivals like SCYB (0.03%), SPHY (0.05%) and USHY (0.08%) charge.
- Thinly traded compared with the giants of the category, which can mean wider bid-ask spreads on the way in and out.
- Launched in 2024, so the track record is short and there is limited history for judging how the managers handle a full credit cycle.
