Our read on BUZZ
CLaunched in the meme-stock spring of 2021, BUZZ turns online chatter into an index: each month it reads social posts, news and blogs, then holds the 75 large-cap US stocks the crowd is most bullish on.
The fund seeks to track, before fees and expenses, the price and yield performance of the BUZZ NextGen AI US Sentiment Leaders Index. That index selects 75 large-cap U.S. stocks with the strongest positive investor sentiment based on social media, news, blogs and other online data.
Why people hold it
- The machinery is refreshingly legible: rank large-cap US names by positive sentiment across social media, news and blogs, take the top 75, cap any single stock at 3%.vaneck.comvaneck.com
- Passive and rules-based. The index reconstitutes monthly, so no manager gets to decide when the mood has shifted.vaneck.com
- The screen stays in large caps, roughly 80 positions deep, so the crowd's favorites arrive filtered to names with real trading depth.vaneck.com
- Easy to get in and out of for a niche thematic, and it has kept running long past the 2021 retail frenzy that launched it.
Worth knowing
- At 0.76% a year, it sits above the median fee in its thematic peer group. LRND (0.14%) and TECB (0.30%) run their themes for a fraction of that.
- Monthly reconstitution means the lineup churns. Chasing sentiment is the whole design, and it brings the turnover and tax friction that come with it.vaneck.com
- Not an income vehicle: it has not been paying distributions, and holdings are chosen on chatter, not valuation or earnings.
