Our read on DBEU

ETF.net Research

BEurope with the currency noise turned down. DBEU holds roughly 400 large and mid cap stocks across 15 developed European markets and hedges the whole basket back to dollars, so the stocks do the talking, not the FX tape.

Stated mandate

The Fund seeks investment results that correspond to the performance of the MSCI EM US Dollar Hedged Index.

Why people hold it

  1. 01Hedges everything, not just the euro. Pounds, francs, kronor and krone are sold forward monthly too, leaving the index 100% hedged to the US dollar.etf.dws.commsci.com
  2. 02About 400 holdings spanning 15 developed European countries, large and mid cap. Broad Europe (UK and Switzerland included), not a eurozone slice.msci.com
  3. 03A currency overlay usually costs extra. At 0.45%, DBEU sits right at the median for the index funds we grade, and lands in the upper half of that peer group.
  4. 04Live since 2013, so the hedge has run through both strong-dollar and weak-dollar stretches rather than a single market mood.

Worth knowing

  1. 01The hedge cuts both ways. When European currencies gain on the dollar, the forwards hand that back, and the issuer notes they may not fully offset currency moves.etf.dws.com
  2. 02Still costlier than plain unhedged index exposure (VT charges 0.06%). The gap is the price of the currency machinery.
  3. 03Trades lightly next to the giants of international equity, so spreads and limit orders deserve more attention here.
