Our read on DJIA
ACovered calls, but on the Dow. This fund owns the 30 blue chips and sells one-month at-the-money calls against them, swapping upside for monthly cash. It also happens to carry the index's own ticker.
The Fund seeks to track, before fees and expenses, the price and yield performance of the DJIA Cboe BuyWrite v2 Index. Its strategy owns Dow Jones Industrial Average stocks and sells corresponding one-month at-the-money call options.
Why people hold it
- Sells one-month at-the-money calls against the Dow 30 it holds. That is the maximum-premium version of the covered-call trade, not a partial overlay on a slice of the book.
- 0.60% a year undercuts the typical fund in its options-income peer group, and fees are one of the few inputs an income overlay actually controls.
- Distributions land monthly by design, funded mainly by option premium rather than the Dow's dividend stream alone.
- Does what the prospectus says: close tracking of its buy-write index and one of the strongest implementations in its options-income cohort.
Worth knowing
- At-the-money strikes on the full portfolio cap each month's upside at the strike. Strong Dow rallies get left on the table; that is the trade being made.
- A cheaper twin exists. DYLG follows the same declared index for 0.35%.
- Assets are modest next to the covered-call heavyweights and trading is moderate, which can show up in bid-ask spreads.
