Our read on EFU
FThe rare double-short on developed international stocks. EFU aims for -2x the daily move of the MSCI EAFE index, and that daily reset makes it a short-horizon trading tool rather than a set-and-forget position.
EFU seeks daily investment results, before fees and expenses, corresponding to -2x the daily performance of the MSCI EAFE Index.
Why people hold it
- One of very few ETF ways to take a 2x inverse position on developed markets outside the US, without shorting on margin or running your own futures book.proshares.com
- The mandate leaves nothing to interpretation: -2x the daily performance of the MSCI EAFE Index, before fees. No stock picking, no manager discretion.proshares.com
- Launched in 2007, so the plumbing has run through the financial crisis and every overseas drawdown since. ProShares has been building these daily-reset funds longer than almost anyone.
Worth knowing
- Daily reset means the math compounds off each day's close. Hold longer than a day and the result can drift well away from -2x the index's move over that stretch.proshares.com
- Costs run far above the typical leveraged or inverse fund, and that drag accrues daily. The single-inverse sibling EFZ tracks the same index at a much lower expense ratio.
- A small fund that trades thinly, so bid-ask spreads can widen and limit orders do real work here.

EFU Risk
This fund targets a multiple of the daily move of its index and resets daily. Hold it longer than one reset and compounding makes the return diverge from that target. In choppy markets it can lose value even when the index ends flat.
- 24.0%
How it’s calculated: standard deviation
The sample standard deviation of monthly total returns, multiplied by the square root of 12.
Uses up to 36 complete months, with at least 12 required. Total returns include reinvested distributions.
- −1.33
How it’s calculated: Sharpe ratio
Subtract each month’s Treasury-bill return from the fund’s monthly total return.
Divide the average of those excess returns by their sample standard deviation, then multiply by the square root of 12.
Uses up to 36 complete months, with at least 12 required. Each month uses the Treasury yield quoted at the end of the previous month.
- −77.4%
How it’s calculated: maximum drawdown
The largest percentage decline from an earlier peak, using total returns with reinvested distributions.
Uses up to five years through the last close, with at least 12 months required.
- −1.23
How it’s calculated: beta
The beta figure is supplied by FMP. The comparison index depends on the fund’s broad asset class.
