Our read on EZBC

ETF.net Research

BFranklin's day-one spot bitcoin ETF: real coins at Coinbase Custody, NAV struck off the 4pm New York bitcoin benchmark, and one of the skinniest fees in the group. An old-line fund house handling the keys.

Stated mandate

The fund seeks to reflect the performance of bitcoin's price.

Why people hold it

  1. 01A 0.19% sponsor fee undercuts most of the January 2024 launch class, and Franklin has waived it down to zero for stretches since day one.investors.franklinresources.com
  2. 02Holds actual bitcoin in a grantor trust, custodied by Coinbase Custody, with BNY Mellon on cash and administration. No wallets, no seed phrases, no exchange logins.sec.gov
  3. 03Priced off the CME CF Bitcoin Reference Rate (New York Variant), a 4pm ET benchmark, and the fund has tracked that reference very closely.
  4. 04One of the strongest implementations in the spot bitcoin group, in the same top tier as BTC, BITB and HODL.

Worth knowing

  1. 01Bitcoin's swings pass straight through. The structure makes no attempt to cushion drawdowns in the underlying, and the trust pays out nothing along the way.
  2. 02Fee waivers are temporary, with no obligation to renew. The 0.19% sponsor fee is paid by selling bitcoin, so bitcoin per share drifts down over time.investors.franklinresources.comsec.gov
  3. 03It trades far lighter than the category's mega-funds, so spreads can run wider than the biggest spot bitcoin ETFs.
