Our read on FLXR
BA go-anywhere bond fund from a fixed-income house. TCW measures FLXR against the Agg but doesn't copy it, roaming global credit, currencies and rates in search of income. Running since 2018, and it pays monthly.
The fund seeks a high level of current income and, secondarily, long-term capital appreciation. It uses an actively managed flexible approach across global opportunities tied to credit, currencies, and interest rates.
Why people hold it
- Benchmarked to the Agg, not handcuffed to it: an active team works global credit, currencies and rates for current income, with long-term capital appreciation as the stated second goal.
- One of the older active bond ETFs on the tape, live since 2018 and run by a dedicated fixed-income shop. It has since grown into a multi-billion-dollar fund.tcw.com
- Roughly 1,600 positions and a monthly distribution: no single bond carries the portfolio, and income lands on a regular schedule.
- Sits in the upper half of a crowded aggregate-bond field, and sees enough steady volume to absorb ordinary retail-sized orders.
Worth knowing
- The 0.40% fee is real money beside plain index Agg trackers like BND and AGG at 0.03%. You are buying a manager's judgment, not a rulebook.
- Active and flexible cuts both ways: results ride on the team's calls, and the portfolio can look nothing like the Agg index it reports against.
- Monthly does not mean fixed. The payout tracks what the bonds and currency positions actually earn, so the size of each check moves around.

How it’s calculated: standard deviation
The sample standard deviation of monthly total returns, multiplied by the square root of 12.
Uses up to 36 complete months, with at least 12 required. Total returns include reinvested distributions.

Uses up to 36 complete months, with at least 12 required. Each month uses the Treasury yield quoted at the end of the previous month.
- −1.9%
How it’s calculated: maximum drawdown
The largest percentage decline from an earlier peak, using total returns with reinvested distributions.
Uses up to five years through the last close, with at least 12 months required.
- 0.71
