Our read on FTBD
CFidelity's go-anywhere bond sleeve: measured against the Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate, but the managers can roam into foreign and emerging-market debt and shift along the yield curve. Active bets, index yardstick, monthly income.
The fund seeks a high level of current income and may also pursue capital growth. It normally invests at least 80% of assets in debt securities and repurchase agreements across the debt market, using active asset allocation, sector and security selection, yield-curve positioning, and opportunistic trading.
Why people hold it
- Go-anywhere by design: at least 80% in debt securities, with managers setting sector, security and yield-curve positioning across US, international and emerging-market bonds.
- Current income is the stated first goal, and the fund's own income policy sets a monthly distribution cadence.
- Diversified rather than concentrated: a few hundred positions across sectors and regions, and the portfolio has matched the roaming mandate its prospectus describes.
- Standard 1940 Act fund wrapper, so it reports on a 1099 with no K-1 paperwork.
Worth knowing
- 0.55% a year, against 0.03% at plain index trackers like BND, SPAB and AGG. That gap is the bar the manager's calls get measured against.
- Fidelity's own broad active bond ETF, FBND, works off the same benchmark for 0.36%.
- Launched in 2023 and still a small, thinly traded fund, so spreads tend to be wider than at the mega core bond ETFs.
