Our read on JTNY

ETF.net Research

DMost muni ETFs buy the whole country. JTNY buys New York: income built to sidestep federal, state and city income tax, chosen by an active bond team instead of an index.

Stated mandate

The fund seeks federal tax-exempt income and capital preservation for New York residents through investments in municipal securities.

Why people hold it

  1. 01Triple-exempt by design: as a fundamental policy, at least 80% of assets go to New York munis whose interest is exempt from federal, NY State and NYC income tax, and free of individual AMT.sec.gov
  2. 02Actively run, not index-tracked. The strategy dates to 1997, and managers may put up to 20% of assets in below-investment-grade munis when they see value.sec.gov
  3. 03Single-state muni ETFs are thin on the ground. This one arrived as a mutual fund conversion, so it started with hundreds of millions in assets rather than from zero.am.jpmorgan.com

Worth knowing

  1. 01Active costs money: 0.34% a year, above the muni ETF median of 0.30% and far above broad national index funds like VTEB at 0.03% or MUB at 0.05%.
  2. 02Thinly traded, which can mean wider bid-ask spreads and more price impact on larger orders than a heavily traded national muni fund.
  3. 03One state's credit does the heavy lifting. The mandate also permits Puerto Rico and other US territory issuers, plus that 20% junk allowance.sec.govsec.gov
