Our read on NFTY
BMost India funds are a bet on a few megacaps. NFTY splits the NIFTY 50 evenly, so the fiftieth name carries the same weight as the first. Large caps only, rules-based, running since 2012.
NFTY seeks to track, before fees and expenses, the price and yield of the NIFTY 50 Equal Weight Index. It normally invests at least 90% of net assets in common stocks comprising that Index.
Why people hold it
- Equal weight is the whole point: about 50 NIFTY large caps, each given the same slice, so one or two Indian giants don't set the tone.ftportfolios.com
- Tight mandate: normally at least 90% of net assets sit in the common stocks of its index. No stock-picking side quests.ftportfolios.com
- Listed since 2012, so this is a long-running vehicle rather than a fresh idea chasing an India headline.
- The portfolio stays glued to what the documents promise: a passive, index-tracking slice of India's largest listed companies.
Worth knowing
- Costs 0.80% a year, above the India-ETF median of 0.75% and far above cap-weighted options like FLIN at 0.19%.
- Equal weight cuts both ways: when India's biggest names lead, this fund holds less of them than cap-weighted rivals such as INDA or INDY.
- It trades lightly next to the largest India ETFs, so spreads and order type matter more here than in a household-name fund.
