Our read on OILT

ETF.net Research

CMost energy funds rank companies by market cap. OILT ranks them by Texas dirt: you only get in if you have pumped a meaningful slice of the state's oil and gas, and your weight follows the value of what you pull out of the ground.

Stated mandate

The Fund seeks to track, before fees and expenses, the total return of the Alerian Texas Weighted Oil and Gas Index.

Why people hold it

  1. 01Membership is earned from state production records. A company must account for more than 0.1% of Texas oil and gas output over the past 10 years, per Texas Railroad Commission data.sec.gov
  2. 02Economic-value weighting sizes each position by Texas production, so the global majors do not automatically tower over the basket the way they do in cap-weighted energy funds.sec.gov
  3. 03The 0.35% fee sits below the median for oil and gas E&P funds and matches what entrenched peers XOP and OIH charge, which is rare for a niche newcomer.
  4. 04Plain mechanics: it owns the stocks (at least 80% of assets in index names), no futures or swaps, and it pays distributions quarterly.sec.gov

Worth knowing

  1. 01Concentration is the whole idea and the whole trade-off: a non-diversified basket, one sector, one state. A Permian slowdown lands with nothing to cushion it.sec.gov
  2. 02It trades thinly and runs a small asset base, so bid-ask spreads can run wider than in the category's household names.
  3. 03It launched in December 2023, so there is no record yet spanning a full boom-and-bust oil price cycle.
