Our read on PBW

ETF.net Research

CThe 2005 original. PBW was tracking clean energy before the theme had a bandwagon, and it still runs the same play: a US-focused basket of roughly 70 clean energy names, not a handful of global utility giants.

Stated mandate

The fund seeks to track the investment results of the WilderHill Clean Energy Index before fees and expenses. It normally invests at least 90% of total assets in common stocks comprising the index.

Why people hold it

  1. 01Launched in 2005, giving it two decades of history across the theme's booms and busts. Most clean energy ETFs showed up much later.
  2. 02Roughly 70 US-listed positions tied to the WilderHill Clean Energy Index, so smaller pure plays carry real weight instead of being buried under mega-cap utilities.invesco.com
  3. 03Actively traded, which generally means workable spreads for retail-sized orders rather than fighting a thin book.
  4. 04Lands in the upper half of its clean energy peer group on our overall review.

Worth knowing

  1. 01At 0.64% a year it runs above the 0.59% clean energy cohort median, and well above ICLN and FRNW at 0.39%.
  2. 02A narrow theme in mostly smaller companies. Swings here have historically run far wider than the broad market's, in both directions.
  3. 03Distributions come quarterly, but this is a growth theme, not an income sleeve.
