Our read on PKW
DThe original buyback fund, running since 2006 on one blunt rule: own US companies that cut their share count by at least 5% over the past year. Not a dividend fund with buybacks bolted on, but a pure share-shrinkage screen.
The fund seeks exposure to the Nasdaq US BuyBack Achievers Index by normally investing at least 90% of assets in the common stocks comprising that index.
Why people hold it
- One rule, no committee. The index holds US companies that have shrunk shares outstanding by 5% or more over the trailing twelve months. Nothing else buys its way in.indexes.nasdaqomx.com
- Launched December 2006 alongside the index it tracks, giving it a live record through 2008 and everything after. The elder statesman of the buyback shelf.indexes.nasdaqomx.com
- Spread across roughly 220 names, with at least 90% of assets normally in index constituents, so no single repurchase program carries the fund.
Worth knowing
- At 0.62% a year it costs more than the typical index wrapper in its group, and plain broad-market funds like SCHK or VOOV charge a small fraction of that.
- The screen counts shares retired, not cash paid out. Distributions arrive quarterly, but income is a byproduct here rather than the point.indexes.nasdaqomx.com
- Volume is lighter than the headline index funds, so the bid-ask spread is worth a glance before trading.
