Our read on RNRG
DMost clean-energy funds buy the factories. RNRG buys the power plants: roughly 40 global companies that generate and sell renewable electricity. A utility-flavored take on the theme, running since 2015.
The fund seeks investment results that generally track the price and yield performance of the Indxx Renewable Energy Producers Index before fees and expenses.
Why people hold it
- Owns the producers, not the plumbing: its index targets companies that generate and sell renewable power rather than panel and turbine manufacturers.
- One global basket of about 40 producers, so operators outside the US carry real weight instead of a token sleeve.
- Risk profile screens better than most of its clean-energy group, closer to contracted power operators than to boom-and-bust equipment makers.
- Trading since 2015, so it has lived through the theme's full boom and hangover rather than arriving at the peak.
Worth knowing
- At 0.65% a year it prices above the middle of the clean-energy shelf, and broader peers such as ICLN and FRNW charge less for wider coverage.
- Small and thinly traded, so spreads can be wide and size takes patience to work through.
- Producers-only and roughly 40 names: it moves differently from broad clean-energy indexes that lean on manufacturers and tech.

RNRG Risk
- 20.6%
How it’s calculated: standard deviation
The sample standard deviation of monthly total returns, multiplied by the square root of 12.
Uses up to 36 complete months, with at least 12 required. Total returns include reinvested distributions.
- −0.01
How it’s calculated: Sharpe ratio
Subtract each month’s Treasury-bill return from the fund’s monthly total return.
Divide the average of those excess returns by their sample standard deviation, then multiply by the square root of 12.
Uses up to 36 complete months, with at least 12 required. Each month uses the Treasury yield quoted at the end of the previous month.
- −52.1%
How it’s calculated: maximum drawdown
The largest percentage decline from an earlier peak, using total returns with reinvested distributions.
Uses up to five years through the last close, with at least 12 months required.
