Our read on SHYM
CMost muni ETFs track an index of investment-grade paper. This one works the other end: active management, roughly 500 mostly lower-rated municipal bonds, short maturities, and tax-exempt income paid monthly.
The fund is actively managed to provide exposure to U.S. short-duration, high-yield municipal bonds, seeking higher tax-free income while managing interest-rate risk.
Why people hold it
- The unusual pairing is the point: high-yield munis held short, chasing extra tax-free income while trimming the rate sensitivity that swings long-dated muni funds around.
- Actively run, so managers pick through credits and can pass on issuers instead of owning whatever the index hands them. Spread across roughly 500 positions.
- Income arrives monthly, and muni interest is generally exempt from federal tax, which is the whole reason this corner of the bond market exists.
- iShares plumbing behind it, trading since 2021, with an established asset base rather than a startup fund still proving it belongs.
Worth knowing
- 0.42% a year is what the credit research costs. Broad index muni ETFs like VTEB and MUB charge a small fraction of that, and fees come straight out of tax-free income.
- High yield means weaker issuers. The main risk here is credit, not interest rates, and that is a different animal from a plain national muni fund.
- Short duration cuts both ways: less damage when rates spike, less lift when they drop.

- 6.7%
How it’s calculated: standard deviation
The sample standard deviation of monthly total returns, multiplied by the square root of 12.
