Direxion Daily S&P 500 Bear 3X ETF

Leveraged · Leveraged & Inverse · Direxion · Inception 2008-11-05 · SEC filings

This fund multiplies its index's move each day and resets that multiple daily. Because daily returns compound, its long-run return can differ from the headline multiple.

Our read on SPXS

ETF.net Research

DA one-day trading tool, not a hedge you can forget about. SPXS targets 300% of the inverse daily move of the S&P 500 and resets every session, a mechanism Direxion has been running since the fund launched in November 2008.

Stated mandate

The fund seeks daily investment results equal to 300% of the inverse performance of the S&P 500® Index, before fees and expenses.

Why people hold it

  1. 01One of the bluntest ways to take the other side of the S&P 500: it targets 300% of the index's inverse daily move, before fees and expenses.direxion.com
  2. 02No margin account, no stock borrow, no broker calling in the short. You buy shares in a normal account, and the most at stake is what you put in.direxion.com
  3. 03Among the most heavily traded funds in its corner of the market, so getting in and out rarely means hunting for the other side of the trade.
  4. 04Launched in November 2008, it has run its daily-reset machinery through crashes, melt-ups and volatility spikes rather than one calm stretch of market.

Worth knowing

  1. 01The 3x objective resets every day. Hold it longer and compounding can push the result well away from three times the index move over that stretch, either direction.
  2. 02At 1.04% a year it sits above the roughly 0.90% typical of this peer group, and a 1x short such as SPDN charges 0.54% for the same directional view.
  3. 03Leverage runs both ways: a 1% index gain is designed to move the fund about 3% the other direction, which makes this a position to watch intraday, not park.

SPXS Risk

This fund targets a multiple of the daily move of its index and resets daily. Hold it longer than one reset and compounding makes the return diverge from that target. In choppy markets it can lose value even when the index ends flat.

How much the fund’s monthly returns vary, scaled to a year.
36.4%
Annualised · 36 months to Aug 2026
How it’s calculated: standard deviation

The sample standard deviation of monthly total returns, multiplied by the square root of 12.

Uses up to 36 complete months, with at least 12 required. Total returns include reinvested distributions.

Return above 3-month US Treasury bills per unit of volatility.
−1.38
vs 3-month T-bills · to Aug 2026
How it’s calculated: Sharpe ratio

Subtract each month’s Treasury-bill return from the fund’s monthly total return.

Divide the average of those excess returns by their sample standard deviation, then multiply by the square root of 12.

Uses up to 36 complete months, with at least 12 required. Each month uses the Treasury yield quoted at the end of the previous month.

The largest fall from a peak to the low that followed.
−91.1%
Trough Aug 2026
How it’s calculated: maximum drawdown

The largest percentage decline from an earlier peak, using total returns with reinvested distributions.

Uses up to five years through the last close, with at least 12 months required.

How strongly the fund’s returns move with its asset-class index.
−2.87
vs its asset-class index
How it’s calculated: beta

The beta figure is supplied by FMP. The comparison index depends on the fund’s broad asset class.
