Our read on SVOL

ETF.net Research

BShort volatility with the dial turned down: SVOL targets roughly a fifth to a third of the daily move in a short-term VIX futures index, and holds options on those futures to soften extreme spikes.

Stated mandate

SVOL seeks daily, before-fee results of approximately -0.2x to -0.3x the performance of a short-term volatility futures index, while attempting to reduce extreme-volatility effects. It primarily uses VIX futures and options on those futures.

Why people hold it

  1. 01Not a full-throttle inverse VIX trade. The daily target is about -0.2x to -0.3x of a short-term VIX futures index, a deliberately partial dose of a violent exposure.simplify.us
  2. 02The short position is paired with options on VIX futures, built to blunt extreme volatility spikes rather than ride them bare.simplify.us
  3. 03Costs 0.66% a year, below the median for its options-income peer group, and it pays monthly.
  4. 04Running since 2021 with a roughly 30-position book, and it grades out in the upper half of its peer group.

Worth knowing

  1. 01Short volatility collects premium in small pieces and can give it back in bursts. The options overlay is sized to soften spikes, not erase them.
  2. 02The monthly payout comes from a derivatives strategy, so what volatility markets are paying drives the size of the check.
  3. 03A mid-size fund with moderate trading volume, so spreads can be wider than in the giant covered-call names.
