Our read on YLDE
AA 2017 dividend fund with a second act: ClearBridge still picks the payers, and since 2025 a Franklin options desk sells calls on large-cap indexes on top, aiming at a stated annual payout target.
The Fund seeks income and long-term capital appreciation through an actively managed enhanced equity-income strategy. It primarily invests in dividend-paying equities and writes U.S. exchange-traded calls on U.S. large-cap equity indices to enhance income.
Why people hold it
- Runs at 0.47% a year, well under the median for its option-income peer group, and one of the stronger builds in that group on cost and portfolio quality.
- The calls are written on large-cap indexes, not on the individual stocks, so no single holding is capped name by name.franklintempleton.com
- Two desks, one fund: ClearBridge runs the dividend-paying equity sleeve, Franklin's managed-options team runs the overlay.franklintempleton.com
- Pays monthly against a targeted annual payout rate set as a percentage of the prior year-end NAV, reviewed each year by the subadvisers.franklintempleton.com
Worth knowing
- Thinly traded and modest in size, so bid-ask spreads carry more weight here than with the category's giants.
- Payouts can include option gains and return of capital, meaning part of a distribution may be your own money coming back.franklintempleton.com
- This was ClearBridge's ESG dividend strategy until 2025. Today it is an income fund of about 50 names, and results lean on two active teams.franklintempleton.com
