DDFO's first year left the drop it was built for untested
The Innovator Equity Dual Directional 15 Buffer ETF, DDFO, sought a gain of no more than 8.23% after fees in the year ended Wednesday, September 30, 2026, while the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust, SPY, rose 14.48% in price.

Key takeaways
The Innovator Equity Dual Directional 15 Buffer ETF, DDFO, closed its first year on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, in a rising market. The drop it was built to pay for did not arrive.
A holder owns a year-long options position on the S&P 500. In that year the fund sought the price gain in SPY, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust, only up to a cap. If SPY had finished down by 15% or less, the fund sought a gain equal to the size of that drop.
The cap was 9.02% before fees and 8.23% after the 0.79% annual fee. SPY's share price rose 14.48% from the September 30, 2025 close to the September 30, 2026 close.
"These funds put consistent, knowable positive returns within reach," Graham Day, Innovator's chief investment officer, said when the fund listed on Wednesday, October 1, 2025. "In fact, a 15% Dual Directional would have delivered positive returns in 75% of negative historical markets."
That 75% was Innovator's reading of past markets, not a result from this fund. SPY finished higher, so the case Day described did not arrive.
The step past 15% is sharp.
One extra point of decline flips a 15% gain into a loss
Past that line, the fund takes the loss minus a buffer of 15 percentage points. A holder does not keep the gain a smaller drop would have paid. That is what the terms show for someone who holds from the first day of the period to the last, and Innovator says it is not guaranteed.
A higher cap for the new year
On Thursday, October 1, the fund opened a new year through September 30, 2027, tied to an S&P 500 fund rather than SPY.
Innovator set the upside cap at 10.65% before fees, or 9.86% after the same 0.79% fee. The 10.65% cap sits just above the 10.63% top of the range Innovator estimated on September 23.
Innovator set $22.92 as the starting value for the new year. Someone buying now starts there. Last year's gain is already behind that buyer, and the new cap is what the fund seeks from this point.
The 15% rule is unchanged. A drop past that line still turns the sought gain into a loss.
