Nuveen's high-yield ETF turns one at $1.77 billion. Coupons delivered 3.7%
Nuveen High Yield Corporate Bond ETF NHYB marked its first anniversary on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, with $1.77 billion in assets and a 3.70% total return from its first close.

The high-yield market did not reprice in Nuveen's first year. It paid the coupon.
ICE BofA U.S. high-yield option-adjusted spreads stood at 2.66% on Monday, September 21, five basis points tighter than the 2.71% on listing day and below the series' long-run average of 5.16%. The year ended with the Federal Reserve's first rate increase since 2023, a quarter-point move to 3.75%–4.00% on Wednesday, September 16. The 10-year Treasury yield was 4.96% on Tuesday.
Nuveen High Yield Corporate Bond ETF NHYB, listed on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, tracks the ICE BofA BB-B U.S. Cash Pay High Yield Constrained Index: U.S. dollar corporate bonds in the BB and B ratings, cash-paying, and nothing in CCC. From the September 24, 2025 close through Tuesday, September 22, the fund returned 3.70% with distributions reinvested. The share price fell 2.40%, from $25.00 to $24.40. Shares last printed at $24.40 Wednesday morning, unchanged, with the anniversary session still open.
That split is the year. Holders were paid in cash. They were not paid by a rally.
The fund has paid $1.4823 a share across 11 monthly distributions since November 3, 2025, when the cadence began. The latest was $0.1468 a share, ex-date September 1. Nuveen put the 30-day SEC yield, the standardized income figure, at 6.99% as of Monday and effective duration at 2.94 years as of August 31.
BB-B versus the rest of junk
The prospectus promised the upper two rungs of high yield, not the whole market.
Over the same September 24, 2025 to September 22, 2026 close-to-close window, the nearest BB-B peer, Xtrackers USD High Yield BB-B ex Financials ETF BHYB, returned 3.66%. Broad U.S. high-yield trackers lagged by a few tenths of a percentage point. BondBloxx BB Rated USD High Yield Corporate Bond ETF XBB, which is built on BB-rated credits, returned 2.78%. The BB-B pair ran ahead of that BB-only sleeve.

Total return is close to close, distributions reinvested, September 24, 2025 through September 22, 2026. Assets and fees as of September 22–23, 2026.
iShares iBoxx $ High Yield Corporate Bond ETF HYG, the older, 0.49% liquid benchmark, returned 2.85%.
NHYB held 1,670 positions as of September 20. The top ten were 3.97% of assets, and the largest line was a State Street cash vehicle at 0.78%. Meridian, Echostar, and a 10% 2032 note sit near the top here and in the broad funds. The screen is ratings, not a different cast of issuers.
$1.77 billion, still a thinner book
Assets are $1.77 billion as of Wednesday. Net inflows were $1.81 billion in the 12 months through Monday, September 21, and $223 million of that arrived in 2026. The fund is not the giant on the shelf: USHY holds $27.22 billion. Schwab's fund is cheaper at 0.03% and broader. State Street's is cheaper at 0.05% and broader. Vanguard U.S. High-Yield Corporate Bond Index ETF VCHY listed in June at 0.05% and holds $79 million; it does not yet have a year.
Average daily dollar volume still lags the established high-yield books.

Wednesday morning's print went up on 100 shares. Volume is turnover, not a measure of what a holder can lift.
The fund has not lived through a default cycle, so the year cannot show what CCC credits do in one. That test is still ahead.
