AVIVAAvantis International Large Cap Value ETF

BINVCBrandes International ETF

In short

AVIV Avantis takes the academic value playbook overseas: about 600 developed-market large caps screened for cheap prices and strong profitability, at 0.25% a year. Active management without the active-manager price tag.

BINV A 2023 launch that puts the Brandes value discipline in an ETF wrapper: roughly 70 non-US stocks, developed and emerging, picked one company at a time with no index underneath.

Stated mandate

AVIV The fund seeks long-term capital appreciation through a broadly diversified portfolio of large-capitalization companies in non-U.S. developed countries.

BINV The fund seeks long-term capital appreciation by investing primarily in equity securities of non-U.S. companies.

Why people hold it

  • AVIV 0.25% a year, against a roughly 0.65% median across active international value funds. Cheap enough that the fee stops being the deciding factor.
  • Two screens, not one: cheap valuations plus higher profitability. Both factors are written into the mandate rather than left to a manager's mood.
  • About 600 large caps spread across non-US developed markets, so no single name or country steers the fund. Breadth is the design, not a byproduct.
  • Among the active international value ETFs we cover, one of the strongest implementations in the group, and it has been running since 2021.
  • BINV Genuinely active, not an index sleeve: about 70 non-US names selected under Brandes' declared Active Value approach.brandes.com
  • The mandate spans developed and emerging markets, so bargains can be sourced anywhere outside the US rather than in one fenced-off region.
  • Stands in the upper half of its active international value peer group, a cohort packed with well-built competitors.
  • Distributions arrive on a quarterly cadence.

Worth knowing

  • AVIV Value tilts can lag the broad market for long stretches. This one holds the tilt through those stretches rather than trying to time it.
  • Active, with no published index behind it. You are buying the Avantis process, not a rulebook you can audit line by line.
  • Large caps only. The same approach for smaller overseas companies lives in a sibling fund, AVDV, which charges 0.36%.
  • BINV 0.70% a year sits above the 0.65% median for its peer group and well above systematic rivals like AVIV at 0.25%. Stock selection is what the fee buys.
  • Thinly traded, so bid/ask spreads and order type carry more weight here than in a giant index fund.
  • Launched in 2023 and still modest in size, which leaves a short live record to judge the approach by.

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
