JANWCAllianzIM U.S. Equity Buffer20 Jan ETF

In short

BALT Most buffer ETFs hand you a cushion once a year. BALT rebuilds a 20% one every three months: four fresh starts against S&P 500 drawdowns. The trade-off is that the cap resets with it, and it starts low.

JANW A 20% cushion on the S&P 500 that runs on the calendar. JANW resets every January 1 and settles December 31, trading away upside above a cap set at each reset in exchange for absorbing the first 20% of the reference ETF's decline.

Stated mandate

BALT The fund seeks to track the return of SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY), subject to a cap, while buffering investors against losses. It targets a 20% buffer during each three-month outcome period and resets quarterly.

JANW The Fund is designed to match the Underlying ETF’s share-price return through the outcome period up to a specified upside cap, while limiting downside losses with a 20% buffer before fees and expenses.

Why people hold it

  • BALT Deep and short-dated: it targets a 20% buffer against losses in the S&P 500 ETF it references, over a three-month outcome period, then resets for the next quarter.innovatoretfs.com
  • 0.69% a year, under the typical fee in its deep-buffer group, and it has been running the quarterly reset since launching in 2021.
  • One of the larger funds doing 20% buffers on the S&P 500, and one of the strongest implementations in that peer group.
  • JANW The outcome period runs January 1 to December 31, so the hedge lines up with the calendar year instead of some odd mid-month anniversary.
  • A 20% buffer sits at the deep end of the category: it is designed to absorb the first 20% of the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust's price decline over the period, before fees.
  • AllianzIM runs the same Buffer20 structure with other start months (MAYW, JUNW, AUGW, DECW), so a January reset is a choice and laddering across months is possible.
  • Launched at the end of 2020, it has rolled through the reset cycle for years and holds a few hundred million in assets, not a launch-week experiment.

Worth knowing

  • BALT A deep buffer over a short window buys a low ceiling. The cap is set fresh each three-month period, and it is far tighter than what annual buffer funds start with.
  • The 20% cushion is measured from the start of each outcome period. Buy mid-quarter and the buffer and cap you actually own differ from the headline terms.innovatoretfs.com
  • Cheaper 20% buffer options exist: PBFR at 0.50%, Pacer's Swan SOS Flex funds (PSFJ, PSFM) at 0.49%.
  • JANW Buffer and cap are period math, before fees. Buy mid-year and you get whatever cushion and upside remain, not the terms printed each January.
  • The 0.74% fee matches the deep-buffer median but runs above cohort peers PSFJ and PSFM at 0.49% and PBFR at 0.50%.
  • Thinly traded next to the biggest buffer funds, which can mean wider spreads, and it has not been paying distributions.

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
