BKAGABNY Mellon Core Bond ETF

BNDAVanguard Total Bond Market ETF

In short

BKAG A core bond index fund that charges nothing. BKAG tracks the same Bloomberg US Aggregate benchmark the giants track, at a 0.00% expense ratio, and has been doing it since 2020.

BND The whole taxable US investment-grade bond market in one ticker for three basis points. Vanguard's core bond workhorse since 2007, now a $100B-plus fund and the thing most people picture when they say 'bond fund.'

Stated mandate

BKAG The fund seeks to track the Bloomberg US Aggregate Total Return Index.

BND The fund seeks to track a broad U.S. investment-grade bond benchmark. It uses passive sampling to provide diversified exposure to taxable, U.S. dollar-denominated bonds.

Why people hold it

  • BKAG A 0.00% expense ratio. The median fund in the core bond group charges 0.36%, and even the cheap giants (BND, SPAB, SCHZ) charge 0.03%.
  • Tracks the Bloomberg US Aggregate Total Return Index tightly, one of the closest index-following records in its peer group.
  • Broad by design: roughly 4,000 bonds in the portfolio, with distributions paid monthly rather than quarterly.
  • A multi-billion-dollar fund from BNY Mellon, wrapped in a standard 1940 Act ETF structure with no exotic mechanics.
  • BND Charges 0.03%, roughly a tenth of the typical core bond ETF's fee. Nothing in the category charges less; SPAB and SCHZ tie it, and even Vanguard's own VCRB on the same benchmark costs more.
  • Tracks the Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate Float Adjusted Index about as tightly as the data allows, and trades heavily enough that spreads rarely become the story.
  • Pays monthly, runs over $100B, and has been operating since 2007. One of the most durable implementations in the core bond group.

Worth knowing

  • BKAG Rate risk is the trade-off. This is full-market bond exposure, and bond prices move opposite interest rates. Volatility is the weakest part of its profile.
  • Moderately traded, not one of the volume monsters in the category. Spreads and limit orders matter more here than with the largest core bond names.
  • At zero, the fee edge over 0.03% rivals is real but small in dollar terms, so tracking and trading costs do more of the work.
  • BND This is a bond index fund, not a cash sleeve. Prices move opposite interest rates, and the broad Aggregate carries real duration risk.
  • Taxable, US dollar, investment grade only. No high yield, no municipals, no non-US bonds, so income comes from the safer end of the credit ladder.
  • It samples the index rather than owning every bond in it, so holdings track the benchmark's shape instead of replicating it line for line.

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
