VBCAAVanguard Target Maturity 2027 Corporate Bond ETF

In short

BSCV A bond ladder rung in one ticker. BSCV holds a basket of investment-grade US corporate bonds that all mature in 2031, so the portfolio is built to be held to maturity instead of rolling its bonds forever.

VBCA Vanguard showed up late to the bond-ladder aisle and priced it accordingly: one rung of investment-grade corporate bonds, all maturing in 2027, wrapped in an ETF at 0.08%.

Stated mandate

BSCV The fund seeks to track a held-to-maturity portfolio of U.S. dollar-denominated, investment-grade corporate bonds maturing in 2031. It invests at least 80% of assets in bonds comprising its underlying index and uses representative sampling.

VBCA The fund seeks to track a market-weighted index of U.S.-dollar-denominated, investment-grade corporate bonds that mature in 2027.

Why people hold it

  • BSCV Every bond in it matures in 2031. That gives the fund a defined end date, the thing that separates target-maturity funds from ordinary bond funds that roll their holdings indefinitely.
  • 0.10% a year, level with the median for target-maturity bond funds and with Invesco's neighboring rungs BSCT and BSCU.
  • Pays monthly, and it is a multi-billion-dollar, actively traded fund rather than a thin listing you have to nurse in and out of.
  • Roughly 400 bonds sampled against its 2031 index, with tracking that stands among the stronger implementations in the target-maturity group.
  • VBCA At 0.08%, it undercuts the target-maturity norm, where iShares iBonds and Invesco BulletShares rungs run 0.10%.
  • Its bonds are scheduled to mature between January 1 and December 15, 2027, and the index has a planned liquidation around that date, so duration winds down instead of resetting forever.sec.gov
  • Market-weighted and investment-grade only: a single maturity year spread across the US corporate market rather than a handful of hand-picked bonds.
  • Stands among the stronger implementations in a crowded target-maturity group, on cost and portfolio discipline.

Worth knowing

  • BSCV This is a portfolio, not a bond you own outright. Prices move with rates and credit until the holdings mature, and the value at the finish line is not fixed in advance.
  • US dollar investment-grade corporate credit only. Government-bond versions of the same ladder idea, such as IBTJ, live elsewhere in the category.
  • The clock runs down: as 2031 nears, the portfolio gets shorter and more cash-like, so continuing the exposure means stepping to a later maturity year.
  • VBCA Launched in 2026 and still small, it trades thinly; spreads can be wider than on established bond ETFs.
  • Corporate credit, not Treasuries: downgrades and defaults come with the territory. Treasury-only rungs such as IBTJ sidestep that risk.
  • Short operating history, so there is limited data so far on how closely it tracks its index.
