SMINAiShares MSCI India Small-Cap ETF

In short

DGIN Most India ETFs hand you the whole market. DGIN narrows it to one storyline: roughly 30 companies tied to the digitization of India's economy, picked by index rules rather than a stock-picker.

SMIN Most US-listed India funds stop at the blue chips. SMIN keeps going down-cap, tracking an MSCI index of roughly 500 smaller Indian companies, and it has been doing that job since 2012.

Stated mandate

DGIN The Fund seeks to track the performance of an index representing companies that support the digitization of India's economy.

SMIN The fund seeks to track the investment results of an index representing small-capitalization equity securities in India.

Why people hold it

  • DGIN The specialist on a shelf of broad-market India funds. Its stated job is tracking an index of companies that support the digitization of India's economy.
  • At 0.70% a year, it runs a touch under the typical single-country India fund and under VanEck's own India growth sibling, GLIN.
  • Rules-based and legible: it follows the MVIS Digital India Index, and it has stuck closely to that stated mandate rather than drifting into generic India exposure.
  • SMIN Owns the slice of India the headline funds skip: roughly 500 small caps, versus the 50-name blue-chip lineup at INDY.ishares.com
  • At 0.74%, the fee lands right around the middle of the US India-fund pack, which is unusual for a specialist small-cap sleeve.
  • One of the stronger implementations among US-listed India funds: tight tracking of its stated index, iShares plumbing, and a live record back to 2012.

Worth knowing

  • DGIN About 30 stocks, one theme, one country. Three layers of concentration, so it can travel a very different path from a broad India index.
  • A small fund that trades thinly. Spreads can widen, and limit orders are the standard workaround for funds in this size band.
  • Income is a byproduct here: cash goes out once or twice a year, not monthly. The 2022 launch also means a short history versus the veteran India funds.
  • SMIN Small caps inside one emerging market swing hard in both directions, and rupee moves stack on top of the stock moves.
  • Reasonable for the niche, pricey next to broad India trackers: FLIN charges 0.19% for the large-cap version of the trade.
  • Moderately traded rather than a top-of-book giant, so size your orders with care. Cash comes back once or twice a year, not monthly.

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
