DTREFFirst Trust Alerian Disruptive Technology Real Estate ETF

HAUZAXtrackers International Real Estate ETF

In short

DTRE Most global real estate funds own offices, malls and apartments. DTRE runs a concentrated book of roughly 30 names built around one idea: property tied to technology-driven demand.

HAUZ The bargain passport for property: HAUZ owns real estate companies everywhere except the US, developed and emerging alike, for 0.10% a year. One of the cheapest ways to own the rest of the world's landlords.

Stated mandate

DTRE The fund seeks to track the pre-fee performance of the Alerian Disruptive Technology Real Estate Index and normally invests at least 90% of net assets in the index's common stocks, REITs, and depositary receipts.

HAUZ The fund seeks investment results that generally correspond to the performance of an iSTOXX Developed and Emerging benchmark.

Why people hold it

  • DTRE One idea, not a sampler: roughly 30 global holdings selected by the Alerian Disruptive Technology Real Estate Index rather than a broad property basket.
  • Rules-based by design. At least 90% of net assets normally sit in the index's common stocks, REITs and depositary receipts.ftportfolios.com
  • Global mandate with a quarterly distribution schedule, and the depositary-receipt sleeve lets it hold listings outside the US.
  • HAUZ Charges 0.10% a year against a 0.50% median for global real estate funds, undercutting even the low-cost giants VNQI (0.12%) and REET (0.14%).
  • The US is deliberately left out. The index covers developed and emerging markets outside America, so it sits beside a domestic REIT holding instead of doubling it.dws.com
  • About 400 holdings across dozens of markets, weighted by free float, so it owns the world's big listed property names rather than making country bets.dws.com
  • Running since 2013 as a plain index tracker, and its portfolio lines up closely with the benchmark it promises.

Worth knowing

  • DTRE The 0.60% expense ratio sits above the typical global real estate fund and well above plain index peers such as REET (0.14%) and VNQI (0.12%).
  • A small fund that trades thinly, so spreads and the cost of moving size can run higher than with the category's heavyweights.
  • Concentration cuts both ways: with roughly 30 names on one theme, a single holding or storyline moves this fund more than a broad REIT index.
  • HAUZ One sector, one theme. Property equities move with interest rates and credit, and this fund's swings have been wider than most of what we grade.
  • Distributions arrive once or twice a year, not monthly, so the income shows up lumpy.
  • Moderate trading volume rather than headline volume, which can mean wider bid-ask spreads than the busiest global real estate funds.

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
