FLCBAFranklin U.S. Core Bond ETF

IUSBAiShares Core Universal USD Bond ETF

In short

FLCB An actively managed core bond fund that plays off the Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate instead of copying it, for 0.15%. Managers set the sector, credit and duration mix; income arrives monthly.

IUSB Most core bond funds stop at investment grade. IUSB keeps going, folding high-yield USD debt into the same wrapper across roughly 18,000 bonds, for 0.06% a year.

Stated mandate

FLCB The actively managed ETF invests at least 80% of net assets in bonds of U.S. issuers, including government, corporate, mortgage-backed, and asset-backed debt. It is predominantly investment grade and generally manages sector, credit, and duration exposure with reference to the Bloomberg Barclays U.S. Aggregate Bond Index.

IUSB The Fund seeks to track an index of U.S.-dollar-denominated bonds spanning investment-grade and high-yield sectors.

Why people hold it

  • FLCB 0.15% for an active manager, against a 0.36% median across aggregate-bond ETFs. The judgment calls don't start in a fee hole.
  • A real active mandate: at least 80% in U.S. bonds (government, corporate, mortgage- and asset-backed), predominantly investment grade, with the Agg as the reference point.
  • Income dividends land monthly, with capital gains distributed at least annually.
  • Running since 2019 and now a multi-billion-dollar fund, it stands as one of the stronger implementations in a very crowded core-bond field.
  • IUSB 0.06% a year, a fraction of what the typical broad bond fund in its category charges, and iShares has run it since 2014.
  • Roughly 18,000 bonds spanning investment-grade and high-yield sectors, so one ticker covers ground a plain Agg tracker leaves on the table.ishares.com
  • Tracks its index closely, trades heavily, and sits on a multi-billion-dollar asset base. Income is paid monthly.
  • Among the strongest implementations in a crowded field of nearly 200 core bond funds.

Worth knowing

  • FLCB Index giants BND, SPAB and SCHZ charge 0.03%. Here you're paying for a manager's decisions, not an index license.
  • Active by design, so sector, credit and duration positioning can pull results away from the Agg in either direction.
  • A compact book of roughly 50 positions and moderate trading volume: individual calls carry weight, and limit orders are the sane habit.
  • IUSB That high-yield sleeve is the trade-off: more credit risk than an investment-grade-only fund, and more movement when spreads widen.
  • BND, SPAB and SCHZ charge 0.03%, half IUSB's fee, but they stay inside investment grade.
  • Payouts land monthly, but the amount floats with the coupons underneath. Nothing about the income stream is fixed.

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
