FLCOBFranklin Investment Grade Corporate ETF

USIGAiShares Broad USD Investment Grade Corporate Bond ETF

In short

FLCO Most investment-grade corporate ETFs hand you the index and get out of the way. FLCO is the active take: Franklin's bond team picks roughly 220 corporates against the Bloomberg investment-grade benchmark, and pays income monthly.

USIG Most investment-grade corporate bond funds hand you one slice of the maturity curve. USIG takes the whole thing, thousands of US dollar corporate bonds from short-dated to long, for four basis points a year.

Stated mandate

FLCO The Fund seeks a high level of current income consistent with prudent investing while also seeking preservation of capital.

USIG The fund seeks to track an index of U.S. dollar-denominated investment-grade corporate bonds.

Why people hold it

  • FLCO Active, not an index clone: the managers choose sectors, issuers and maturities, with the Bloomberg U.S. Corporate Investment Grade Index as the yardstick.
  • Built around cash flow: the stated objective is a high level of current income with preservation of capital, and distributions land monthly.
  • About 220 bonds, against the thousands inside broad index trackers. A curated slice of the corporate market rather than the whole haystack.
  • Trading since 2016, and what it actually holds lines up closely with the investment-grade corporate mandate in its filings.
  • USIG Costs 0.04% a year, against a category median near 0.19%. CORP, which tracks the same ICE BofA US Corporate Index, charges 0.41%.
  • One ticker, the full USD investment-grade corporate curve: thousands of bonds, short to long. Slice funds like IGSB (1-5 year) and IGIB (5-10 year) each cover one segment.ishares.com
  • Running since 2007, it has tracked its index with very little drift and is one of the more actively traded funds in its category.
  • Interest lands monthly, and this is a multi-billion-dollar fund that ranks among the strongest implementations in its peer group.

Worth knowing

  • FLCO At 0.35% a year it sits above the typical fee in the investment-grade corporate group, where index heavyweights like VCIT and USIG charge a small fraction of that.
  • Mid-sized and moderately traded, so spreads can be wider than at the category's largest, most active tickers.
  • Active means results hinge on the team's credit and duration calls, not just the benchmark. Investment-grade corporates still carry interest rate and credit risk.
  • USIG Owning the whole curve means long-dated bonds ride along, so the price swings more when rates move than a short-maturity slice such as IGSB.
  • This is corporate credit, not Treasuries. Investment grade at purchase, but prices can fall when spreads widen or an issuer is downgraded.ishares.com
  • VCIT edges it on fee at 0.03%, though that fund stays in intermediate maturities rather than the full curve.

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
