FLRN—State Street SPDR Bloomberg Investment Grade Floating Rate ETF

SPSBAState Street SPDR Portfolio Short Term Corporate Bond ETF

In short

FLRN The floating-rate outlier on a shelf full of fixed-coupon short bond funds. FLRN owns investment-grade notes whose coupons reset with short-term rates, so the income tracks today's rates rather than the ones locked in years ago.

SPSB The short end of the corporate bond market, bought wholesale: roughly 1,600 investment-grade corporate bonds maturing in one to three years, for four basis points. Built as a cash-adjacent building block, not a yield swing.

Stated mandate

FLRN The fund seeks to track, before fees and expenses, the price and yield performance of the Bloomberg U.S. Dollar Floating Rate Note < 5 Years Index. It provides exposure to investment-grade debt instruments with variable coupons and fixed spreads.

SPSB The fund seeks to track the price and yield performance of the Bloomberg U.S. 1-3 Year Corporate Bond Index before fees and expenses.

Why people hold it

  • FLRN Variable coupons with a fixed spread mean rate moves show up in the payout rather than the price, which keeps interest-rate sensitivity low by design.ssga.com
  • The index takes only USD investment-grade floating rate notes maturing in under five years with at least $300 million outstanding, a size screen that skews toward larger, widely held issues.ssga.com
  • Trading since 2011, a multi-billion-dollar fund that pays monthly and spreads across roughly 600 notes. No exotic sleeve bolted onto the mandate.
  • SPSB Costs 0.04% a year against a 0.19% median for investment-grade corporate bond funds. At the short end, where yields are thin, that gap is a real slice of what you keep.
  • Nothing in the index matures past three years, so rate moves push the price around less than they do at intermediate corporate funds like SPIB or VCIT.ssga.com
  • Roughly 1,600 bonds, market-cap weighted, reconstituted at each month end, with a $300 million minimum issue size. Income arrives monthly.ssga.com
  • Trading since 2009 and now a multi-billion-dollar fund that changes hands actively, one of the sturdier implementations in its peer group.

Worth knowing

  • FLRN At 0.15% it costs more than fixed-coupon short-term peers like VCSH (0.03%) and IGSB (0.04%). You are paying for the floating structure, not a cheaper version of the same thing.
  • Resets cut both ways. When short-term rates climb the coupon follows, and when they fall the income follows them down.
  • Rate protection is not credit protection. These are investment-grade corporate and government-related notes, and their prices still move with credit spreads.ssga.com
  • SPSB Pure corporate credit, no Treasury ballast. Investment-grade paper still reprices when spreads widen, short maturities or not.ssga.com
  • Bonds roll off fast and get replaced at whatever the market pays, so the income stream follows prevailing rates in both directions.ssga.com
  • The manager samples the index rather than buying every bond in it, so the portfolio can drift modestly from the benchmark.sec.gov

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
