FXEBInvesco CurrencyShares Euro Trust

UUPCInvesco DB US Dollar Index Bullish Fund

In short

FXE A 2005-vintage grantor trust that parks actual euros in a bank account and lets you buy them like a stock. Shares reflect the dollar price of the euro plus accrued interest, after trust expenses. No forex account, no futures roll.

UUP One ticker, one job: be long the dollar. Since 2007 UUP has used ICE Dollar Index futures to track the greenback against six major currencies, putting a macro trade that normally needs a futures account inside a brokerage account.

Stated mandate

FXE The Trust is designed to reflect the U.S.-dollar price of the euro, plus any accrued interest, after deducting Trust expenses and liabilities.

UUP The Fund seeks to track positive or negative changes in the Deutsche Bank Long USD Currency Portfolio Index—Excess Return over time. It primarily uses long positions in ICE U.S. Dollar Index futures contracts, while holding Treasury and cash-management instruments for related purposes.

Why people hold it

  • FXE Mechanically plain: the trust holds euro deposits, and shares reflect the U.S.-dollar price of the euro plus accrued interest, after expenses. No futures contracts, no roll schedule to babysit.invesco.com
  • Trading is one of its strong suits for a thin corner of the market, and it stands among the better-executed vehicles in the small single-currency group.
  • The 0.40% fee matches every CurrencyShares sibling (FXB, FXF, FXY, FXC) and sits right at the group median, so you are not paying up for the euro version.
  • Listed since December 2005, which makes it one of the longest-tenured currency products on a US exchange.stockanalysis.com
  • UUP The mechanism is pure: long ICE U.S. Dollar Index futures, so the fund moves with the dollar against the euro, yen, pound, Canadian dollar, Swedish krona and Swiss franc.invesco.com
  • Launched in 2007, it has run through dollar booms and slumps, making it one of the longest-lived currency funds on the tape.
  • Tradability is its strongest suit: an actively traded name where getting in and out rarely means wrestling the spread.
  • Futures carry the currency exposure while Treasury and cash-management instruments sit behind them as collateral.

Worth knowing

  • FXE Any income is just what the euro deposits earn after trust expenses, so distributions are irregular and can dry up when euro-area rates sit low.
  • One currency, one exposure: everything rides on the euro versus the dollar, with no earnings or coupons underneath to cushion a move.
  • It is a grantor trust, not a registered fund, so its structure and tax treatment differ from a standard ETF. The prospectus lays out the details.invesco.com
  • UUP 0.78% a year is a real hurdle, and well above what plain broad-market index trackers in the same cohort charge.
  • It is a commodity pool built on futures, not a standard stock fund, so tax forms and reporting work differently.
  • Currency moves are the entire story here: no earnings, no dividend stream, and distributions are occasional rather than regular.

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
