VBCBAVanguard Target Maturity 2028 Corporate Bond ETF

In short

IBDS A bond fund with an expiration date. IBDS holds a basket of investment-grade corporate bonds that all mature in 2027, pays monthly along the way, then winds up around December 15, 2027 and returns remaining assets to shareholders.

VBCB Vanguard finally showed up to the bond-ladder party. VBCB owns U.S. investment-grade corporate bonds that all mature in 2028, and it undercuts the typical target-maturity rung on fees.

Stated mandate

IBDS The fund seeks to track an index of U.S. dollar-denominated, investment-grade corporate bonds maturing in 2027. It is a term fund that winds up around December 15, 2027, distributing its remaining assets to shareholders.

VBCB The fund seeks to track a market-weighted index of U.S.-dollar-denominated, investment-grade corporate bonds that mature in 2028.

Why people hold it

  • IBDS Acts like a single bond rather than a perpetual fund: the wind-up date (around December 15, 2027) and the final distribution of remaining assets are written into the fund's own documents.
  • Diversification hard to build by hand: about 700 dollar-denominated investment-grade corporate bonds in one ticker, tracking the Bloomberg December 2027 Maturity Corporate Index.ishares.com
  • 0.10% a year, in line with the median target-maturity bond fund, from a lineup that has been running these dated rungs since well before this one launched in 2017.
  • A multi-billion-dollar fund that trades actively and pays monthly, so the ladder rung stays liquid instead of locking you in until maturity.
  • VBCB Charges 0.08% a year, below the 0.10% typical for target-maturity bond funds and below the iBonds and BulletShares rungs (IBDU, BSCT, BSCU) it lines up against.
  • Every bond in the index is dollar-denominated investment grade maturing in 2028: one rung of a bond ladder in one ticker, with income paid quarterly.
  • A plain market-weighted ICE index run through Vanguard's index plumbing, and one of the stronger builds in the target-maturity bond group.

Worth knowing

  • IBDS Corporate credit, not Treasuries. Issuers can be downgraded or default, and the payout at wind-up isn't fixed the way a single bond's par value is.
  • Short runway. As 2027 nears, the holdings mature into cash-like assets, so the fund behaves less and less like a bond fund and more like a countdown.
  • Fee is mid-pack, not low: some target-maturity rungs undercut it, including VBCB at 0.08% and IBTJ at 0.07%.
  • VBCB Launched in 2026 and still small, it trades thinly, so spreads can run wider than on the long-established corporate ladders.
  • Corporate credit, not Treasuries. Investment grade lowers the odds of trouble, but downgrades and defaults stay in the mix.
  • One maturity year, not a whole curve. This is a rung, not a stand-in for a broad bond fund.
