IUSBAiShares Core Universal USD Bond ETF

WCPBBWeitz Core Plus Bond ETF

In short

IUSB Most core bond funds stop at investment grade. IUSB keeps going, folding high-yield USD debt into the same wrapper across roughly 18,000 bonds, for 0.06% a year.

WCPB Weitz has been an independent Omaha shop since 1983. In 2025 it put its fixed income playbook in an ETF: an actively run core bond portfolio that hunts income in the mortgage and asset-backed corners the Agg leaves thin.

Stated mandate

IUSB The Fund seeks to track an index of U.S.-dollar-denominated bonds spanning investment-grade and high-yield sectors.

WCPB The fund's primary objectives are current income and capital preservation.

Why people hold it

  • IUSB 0.06% a year, a fraction of what the typical broad bond fund in its category charges, and iShares has run it since 2014.
  • Roughly 18,000 bonds spanning investment-grade and high-yield sectors, so one ticker covers ground a plain Agg tracker leaves on the table.ishares.com
  • Tracks its index closely, trades heavily, and sits on a multi-billion-dollar asset base. Income is paid monthly.
  • Among the strongest implementations in a crowded field of nearly 200 core bond funds.
  • WCPB Built to roam where the Agg does not. The fund's own materials point to agency and non-agency mortgages, asset-backed paper and select corporate credit as the "plus" in core plus.weitzinvestments.com
  • Income comes first in the mandate: current income and capital preservation are the stated objectives, and cash goes out monthly.
  • Not a new idea in a new wrapper. Weitz runs the same research-driven fixed income process it has used in its mutual funds, and the ETF discloses its holdings daily.businesswire.comweitzinvestments.com
  • What sits in the portfolio lines up closely with the income-and-preservation mandate on the label, which is not a given among active bond funds.

Worth knowing

  • IUSB That high-yield sleeve is the trade-off: more credit risk than an investment-grade-only fund, and more movement when spreads widen.
  • BND, SPAB and SCHZ charge 0.03%, half IUSB's fee, but they stay inside investment grade.
  • Payouts land monthly, but the amount floats with the coupons underneath. Nothing about the income stream is fixed.
  • WCPB 0.45% a year sits above the 0.36% category median and far above 0.03% index trackers like BND and SPAB. You are paying for active judgment, not index replication.
  • It opened in August 2025, so the record is short and trading is lighter than the category's giants, which can mean wider spreads on the way in and out.
  • Stepping outside the Agg into structured credit means results can diverge from a plain aggregate index fund, in either direction.weitzinvestments.com

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
