JPIEBJPMorgan Income ETF

SPABAState Street SPDR Portfolio Aggregate Bond ETF

In short

JPIE A go-anywhere active bond fund in a category built on index trackers. JPIE hunts income across mortgages, asset-backed paper, high yield and emerging-market debt, and pays monthly. Cost: 0.40%.

SPAB A 2007-vintage core bond fund priced at 0.03%: roughly 8,500 US investment-grade bonds in one ticket, at the same rock-bottom fee the household names charge for the same index.

Stated mandate

JPIE The fund seeks to provide income, with capital appreciation as a secondary objective, by investing across debt markets.

SPAB The fund seeks to track the price and yield performance of the Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate Bond Index before fees and expenses, providing broad exposure to U.S.-dollar-denominated investment-grade bonds.

Why people hold it

  • JPIE Income is the job, not a byproduct: it aims to pay a dividend every month, drawn from sectors chosen partly because their returns don't move in lockstep.jpmorgan.com
  • Genuine flexibility: the prospectus allows more than 65% of assets in below investment grade debt, and lets the managers rotate sectors as conditions shift.sec.gov
  • Spread thin on purpose: roughly 2,800 bond positions, so no single borrower carries much weight. A multi-billion-dollar fund that trades actively.
  • Sits in the upper half of a crowded core-bond field, with one of the more risk-controlled profiles among income-first bond funds we review.
  • SPAB 0.03% a year against a 0.36% median for its peer group, and the same ticket price as AGG, SCHZ and BBAG on the identical index.
  • Roughly 8,500 dollar-denominated investment-grade bonds in one line item, tracking the Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate Bond Index. Diversification you could not assemble bond by bond.ssga.com
  • Trades actively and has tracked its index closely, putting it among the stronger implementations in the core-bond group.
  • Running since 2007, now a multi-billion-dollar fund, and it pays monthly rather than quarterly.

Worth knowing

  • JPIE 0.40% a year, above the core-bond norm: AGG and BND charge 0.03%. That gap is the price of a manager making sector calls instead of copying an index.
  • The income comes from credit and securitized paper, not Treasuries, so stress in those markets can move the price even when rates sit still.sec.govjpmorgan.com
  • No index to hug: it's measured against the Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate but built freely, so its mix and results can look nothing like the Agg's.jpmorgan.com
  • SPAB Bond prices move opposite yields. When rates rise the index falls and the fund follows it down; a 0.03% fee cannot cushion that.
  • AGG, SCHZ and BBAG hold the same declared index at the same 0.03%. Picking among them comes down to spreads and platform, not the portfolio.
  • Investment grade and US dollar only by mandate: high yield and foreign-currency debt sit outside the remit.ssga.com

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
