SOXXAiShares Semiconductor ETF

XSDAState Street SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF

In short

SOXX The original chip ETF, running since 2001 and still one of the most heavily traded ways to own the semiconductor complex: roughly 30 US-listed names, from chip designers to the equipment makers who supply them.

XSD The chip fund that spreads the bet. XSD tracks a modified equal weighted index of US semiconductor stocks, roughly 50 names across large, mid and small caps, sized similarly instead of ranked by market value.

Stated mandate

SOXX The Fund is designed to follow an index of U.S.-listed companies operating in the semiconductor sector.

XSD The fund seeks to track the total return of the S&P Semiconductor Select Industry Index before fees and expenses.

Why people hold it

  • SOXX Live since 2001, it is one of the longest-running semiconductor funds and now a multi-billion-dollar one, with heavy daily volume that typically keeps bid-ask spreads narrow.
  • 0.33% a year, slightly under the typical fee among semiconductor ETFs.
  • A clean pure play: the index tracks US-listed semiconductor companies only, roughly 30 of them, spanning the chip value chain rather than one slice of it.ishares.com
  • On cost, liquidity and index execution together, it stands among the stronger builds in a crowded semiconductor field.
  • XSD Modified equal weighting starts every holding at a similar size, so one mega-cap chipmaker does not set the tone for the whole fund.ssga.com
  • Reaches into small and mid cap chip names, not just the giants. SMH, by contrast, holds the 25 largest US listed semiconductor companies.ssga.comvaneck.com
  • Live since 2006 and now a multi-billion-dollar fund, with a long public record through the industry's boom and bust stretches.
  • A clean, rules-based build: one index, one sub-industry, US listed stocks, and quarterly distributions. Not much guesswork about what you own.

Worth knowing

  • SOXX One sector, roughly 30 stocks, non-diversified by design. Moves are bigger than a broad market fund's in both directions.ishares.com
  • Cheaper chip funds exist: SOXQ charges 0.19% and CHPS 0.15%, so part of this fee buys the deeper trading pool rather than the exposure itself.
  • Not an income vehicle. Chipmakers tend to pay modest dividends, and the fund distributes quarterly.ishares.com
  • XSD The 0.35% fee sits right at the middle of the semiconductor pack. SOXQ (0.19%) and CHPS (0.15%) charge less for chip exposure.
  • One cyclical industry, about 50 stocks, and equal weighting parks far more of the fund in smaller chipmakers than a market-cap index would.ssga.com
  • Moderately traded rather than a volume monster, so bid-ask spreads can run wider than the category's busiest funds.

How we measure overlap

Each holding counts at its smaller weight in the two funds, summed over the full Holdings. Sector, country and asset class use the same rule on each fund’s split. Cash, FX and derivative lines stay out of the counts. Two bond funds get no overlap figure.
