Our read on ABLG
CA developed-markets stock picker with a cash-register mindset: it hunts companies shrinking their share count, growing free cash flow, and cutting debt, measured against the S&P Developed ex-U.S. Index at similar volatility.
The fund seeks long-term returns exceeding the S&P Developed ex-U.S. Index while maintaining similar volatility. It uses an active stock-selection process based on float shrink, free-cash-flow growth, and declining leverage.
Why people hold it
- The screen is a balance-sheet checklist: fewer shares outstanding, rising free cash flow, falling leverage. Three signs a company is funding itself instead of diluting you.
- At 0.54% it sits under the 0.60% median for active international funds, so the stock picking does not start in a fee hole.
- Trading since 2017, with a multi-year live record in developed markets rather than a backtest, and cash paid out on a quarterly schedule.
Worth knowing
- Small fund, light volume. Spreads can be wide and a chunky order can move the price, so the round trip may cost more than the expense ratio alone.
- Broad international peers like AVDE and DFIC run near 0.22% to 0.23%, so this screen costs roughly double the cheapest names in the group.
- Active by design: the portfolio can look nothing like the S&P Developed ex-U.S. Index and drift from it, in either direction, over any given stretch.
