Our read on BBHY

ETF.net Research

AJunk bonds without the markup. BBHY tracks the full ICE BofA US High Yield Index across roughly 1,600 issues for 0.07% a year and pays monthly: a plain, broad-market build with no ratings tilts or sector screens.

Stated mandate

The ETF seeks to provide exposure to U.S. high-yield debt by using a passive approach intended to closely replicate the ICE BofA US High Yield Index.

Why people hold it

  1. 01Charges 0.07% a year, well under what the typical high yield ETF in this category costs, and it tracks the same declared index as SPHY.am.jpmorgan.com
  2. 02Roughly 1,600 bonds spanning the broad US high yield market, so no single issuer's trouble carries much weight in the portfolio.
  3. 03Straight passive replication, no credit picking. It has run since 2016 and sits among the stronger implementations in the high yield peer group.
  4. 04Distributions land monthly rather than quarterly, so coupon income arrives on a steadier schedule.

Worth knowing

  1. 01Not the cheapest option on the shelf: SCYB runs 0.03%, SPHY and HYLB 0.05%. Small in dollars, but the gap is real.
  2. 02Everything inside is rated below investment grade. Credit stress hits this corner of the bond market harder than Treasuries or investment-grade paper.am.jpmorgan.com
  3. 03Trading is moderate rather than heavyweight and assets sit below the category's largest funds, so spreads are worth checking on bigger orders.
