Our read on BEMB

ETF.net Research

AOne ticker for the US-dollar emerging-market bond market: sovereign, quasi-sovereign and corporate issuers in a single index fund, priced at 0.15% a year.

Stated mandate

The fund seeks to track an index of U.S.-dollar-denominated bonds issued by emerging-market sovereign, quasi-sovereign, and corporate entities.

Why people hold it

  1. 01Charges 0.15% a year, well below the typical fee in its peer group, and cost is the piece of a bond fund's return you actually control.
  2. 02Government, quasi-government and company debt sit inside one J.P. Morgan credit index (roughly 300 bonds) instead of three separate sleeves you stitch together.
  3. 03Every bond is dollar-denominated, so local currency moves don't get layered on top of the credit call. Income is paid monthly.
  4. 04Cheap, broad and backed by iShares plumbing, it lands in the upper half of its emerging-markets cohort.

Worth knowing

  1. 01Small and thinly traded. Limit orders and a glance at the spread matter more here than with the giant EM bond funds.
  2. 02Dollar pricing strips out currency translation, not credit risk. EM sovereign and corporate spreads can move sharply when risk appetite turns.
  3. 03Launched in 2023, so the record is short by bond-fund standards and covers only a slice of a full credit cycle.
