Our read on BITW
BOne ticker for the ten largest crypto assets, rebalanced monthly, running since 2017. Bitwise built the veteran of the multi-coin basket, and it prices like a veteran: 2.5% a year.
The fund seeks to invest in a broad portfolio of crypto assets that tracks the Bitwise 10 Large Cap Crypto Index, with monthly rebalancing to reflect index changes.
Why people hold it
- Tracks the Bitwise 10 Large Cap Crypto Index with monthly rebalancing, so the basket rotates as the large-cap crypto lineup changes. No wallets, keys, or exchange accounts.
- Live since 2017, a long operating history for this asset class, spanning several full crypto boom-and-bust cycles.
- Has hewed tightly to its stated index and mandate. What the prospectus describes is what the portfolio holds.
- Trades with better depth and tighter friction than most of its multi-coin peer group, useful in an asset class where entry and exit costs bite.
Worth knowing
- The fee is the headline trade-off: 2.5% a year, multiples of the peer median. Franklin's EZPZ lists 0.00% and Hashdex's NCIQ 0.25% for similar broad-basket exposure.
- Raw crypto beta. Swings dwarf those of equity funds, and the basket is concentrated in the largest coins rather than spread thin.
- No income stream. The fund has not paid distributions, so any return has to come from price.
