Our read on BSSX

ETF.net Research

COne rung of a municipal bond ladder in a single ticker. BSSX tracks an index of U.S. munis whose effective maturities all land in 2033, spreading roughly 1,600 of them across one fund.

Stated mandate

The fund is based on the Invesco BulletShares® USD Municipal Bond 2033 Index and invests at least 80% of its assets in municipal bonds included in that index. The index covers U.S. dollar-denominated municipal securities with effective maturities in 2033.

Why people hold it

  1. 01Roughly 1,600 municipal bonds in one 2033 rung, spreading issuer risk far wider than a hand-built ladder of a few bonds.
  2. 02Defined maturity is baked in: the index holds only munis with effective maturities in 2033, so the portfolio's remaining life shortens as that year approaches.
  3. 03Income arrives monthly, and the mandate is tight: at least 80% of assets in municipal bonds from its named 2033 index.

Worth knowing

  1. 01At 0.18% a year it sits above the target-maturity norm. Treasury and corporate rungs such as IBTJ (0.07%) and BSCT (0.10%) charge less for the same ladder idea.
  2. 02A smaller fund that trades thinly, so bid-ask spreads can run wide. Limit orders are the standard defense.
  3. 03Launched in 2023, so it carries a short track record and a long stretch of rate and credit weather before its bonds come due.
