Our read on CEMB
BMost emerging-markets funds buy governments or stocks. CEMB buys the companies: roughly 1,100 dollar-denominated corporate bonds from EM issuers, in an iShares wrapper that has been running since 2012 and pays monthly.
The fund seeks to track the J.P. Morgan CEMBI Broad Diversified Core Index, representing U.S.-dollar-denominated emerging-market corporate bonds.
Why people hold it
- The bonds are issued in U.S. dollars, so local-currency swings aren't part of the package the way they are in most EM funds.
- Roughly 1,100 corporate bonds across emerging-market issuers, so no single borrower carries the portfolio.
- Income lands monthly, and the fund has been running since its 2012 launch, through multiple EM credit cycles.
- Follows a J.P. Morgan CEMBI Broad Diversified Core index rather than a house-built benchmark, so the rulebook belongs to a third party.
Worth knowing
- 0.50% a year. That's about the median for its emerging-markets peer group, but far above broad index equity options like VEXC at 0.07%.
- Dollar bonds remove the currency question, not the credit one. You still hold company default risk plus the country risk standing behind each issuer.
- Mid-size and moderately traded rather than a category giant, so spreads can run wider than on the largest bond ETFs.
