Our read on CEW
CEW isn't a bond fund in disguise. It holds a basket of emerging-market currencies and the local money-market rates that go with them, so results ride on EM short rates and how those currencies move against the dollar. Trading since 2009.
CEW seeks total returns tied to money-market rates available in selected emerging-market countries and changes in those currencies’ values against the U.S. dollar.
Why people hold it
- A rare straight shot at emerging-market money: a basket of EM currencies plus the short-term rates in those markets, with no credit or duration bet layered on top.
- Basket, not a one-country wager. Exposure spreads across selected emerging markets, so no single currency's move sets the whole outcome.
- Launched in 2009 and built as a registered 1940 Act fund, not an exchange-traded note leaning on a bank's credit, which is how a lot of currency exposure gets packaged.
Worth knowing
- 0.55% a year is the toll for this plumbing, meaningfully more than plain ultrashort bond ETFs such as VUSB or SHV charge for their much simpler job.
- A small fund that trades lightly next to the household-name ultrashort ETFs it gets shelved with, so bid-ask spreads tend to be wider.
- Currency direction, not rate income, tends to run the show: EM currencies weakening against the dollar can outweigh what local money-market rates contribute. Distributions come once or twice a year.

- 5.2%
How it’s calculated: standard deviation
The sample standard deviation of monthly total returns, multiplied by the square root of 12.
Uses up to 36 complete months, with at least 12 required. Total returns include reinvested distributions.
- 0.52
How it’s calculated: Sharpe ratio
Subtract each month’s Treasury-bill return from the fund’s monthly total return.
Divide the average of those excess returns by their sample standard deviation, then multiply by the square root of 12.
Uses up to 36 complete months, with at least 12 required. Each month uses the Treasury yield quoted at the end of the previous month.
- −12.1%
How it’s calculated: maximum drawdown
The largest percentage decline from an earlier peak, using total returns with reinvested distributions.
Uses up to five years through the last close, with at least 12 months required.
- 0.63
How it’s calculated: beta
The beta figure is supplied by FMP. The comparison index depends on the fund’s broad asset class.
